Yes, we're thinking rental -- possibly of sea kayaks, possibly of bicycles too, plenty of opportunities!! lots of instruction available -- until we get a good sense of what would work for us at this age (70! almost 72!) and stage of life. One thing for sure: a huge pent up demand for golf!!

Thanks for your advice! Our Costco "Lifetime Lotus" kayaks are totally incapable of a roll. Last evening we were chatting with our next door neighbour, a PEI lifer and keen kayaker. And yes: kayak on the bay ONLY when mill pond smooth and even then only very close to our dock since winds can blow up. Most of our kayaking will be on non-tidal small rivers and sheltered ponds. 6 days ago

Thanks for the reading suggestions! I have just acquired a new Kobo AND a PEI library card which permits online downloads free!!
And I have a wonderful book on the paddling trails of PEI which I'd begun reading before we left Ontario. It sits beside my bed. Believe me, although a neighbour up the street circumnavigated the Island in her kayak (over multiple days of course) we will NOT be venturing out of the bay into open ocean at all. Not at all. And not even the bay when it's windy. There are rip currents and all kinds of very concerning hazards! Besides, there are so many beautiful ponds and non-tidal rivers and salt marshes for birding: and for us, kayaking is really about birding!! 7 days ago

Very fun to notice what we took for granted -- and what's "normal" to the locals but stands out to us in a new place!! Sounds to me as if you've settled in nicely after your big geographic/career change!! 7 days ago

Chimney swifts!! So rare . . .I'd only encountered them about two years ago in Ontario where they are protected. Remarkable to watch them swirling at dusk down into the chimney like reverse smoke! And bluebirds . . . who doesn't love a bluebird? Their recovery post DDT such a miracle!!
I'm hearing rumours of mosquitoes here but trust that a brisk Atlantic breeze off the bay will keep them under a semblance of control some of the time! This is a major migratory route and fully a third of all North American great blue herons are said to pass through PEI with many of them nesting here as well. It's basically a birder's paradise!! 8 days ago
