I have lost and then regained 80+ pounds not just once, but twice over the last 10 years. Each time I relied on crash diets with insanely restricted calories to rapidly shed weight only to pack it all back on and then some. I knew I was gaining weight but since I avoided the scale like the plague, I had no idea how much.

When I finally got back on my scale I was apalled by what I saw. I was the heaviest I had ever been (and scarily enough I had started eating heathfully 3 weeks before so I had probably lost a few pounds by this point). Deeply in denial, I had unknowingly been pushing the limits of what I thought my body could handle and still be standing.

This time around I'm determined to lose weight the healthy way and keep it off for good. I want to focus less on the final destination and more on the journey to create new, life-long healthy habits. Here are a few things I'm doing differently this time around:

- Seeing a therapist to work through emotional issues that contribute to my overeating.

- Renew my love affair with fruits and veggies. I did a 30-day vegan challenge to kickstart a new perspective on making fruits, veggies and whole grains the centerpiece of my diet, and I loved it so much I've largely continued this way of eating on a day-to-day basis.

- Getting more active by moving around more throughout the day and trying to log 10,000+ steps per day on a pedometer.

- Exercising for fun and fitness rather than for maximum calorie burn like some kind of crazed hamster on a wheel (seriously, that is how I used to exercise for weight loss - I'm sure it was a scary, scary sight).

- Living in the moment and learning to love myself just as I am every step of the way.

I so look forward to adding to this list as I learn more tips and practices from the SparkPeople community - I am so inspired by all of your successes!
