They would freeze if we left them, so we didn't have much choice... They mostly roosted pretty low. Mom actually tempted the hawk into a cat carrier with cat food! And our chickens are mostly for eggs, although we do eat the extra roosters. 231 days ago

Wow, that's dedication to bring your chickens out of the trees at night! Does someone climb up or do you have a ladder? I remember when I was a kid and we'd have a few roost in a tree occasionally and that's just where they had to stay, because they were way up there. I'm still thinking about that hawk that went in your coop too! He was VERY determined to get his chicken dinner...I bet getting him out was a good trick. Does your family raise chickens for meat, eggs or both? 231 days ago

Thanks for your comment.. And for the info about the hawks...that is bad news! I can't believe one already sniffed out my chickens...I literally live in the city. Growing up I had chickens, ducks and geese and what I learned was that I never want geese. ;) We never had a hawk threat at all for the chickens or ducks. Maybe that was because there was plenty of other easier prey available. That's great you have chicks, or your parents do. There's nothing better than life on the farm! 237 days ago

Yeah, I don't love geese either... But mom does for some reason. I'll admit that the goslings are adorable! We once had a hawk so brazen that mom found it perching INSIDE a chicken coop! We got permission to relocate it instead of killing it! 237 days ago
