A Better Me
After gaining a bunch of weight over two short years and keeping it on, I lost 30 pounds in 2010. After life got in the way, I gained it back and then some. Now I am taking control of my health/weight and getting into shape.
Growing up, I was chubby until about 9th grade. After a growth spurt, I was in good shape, but unfortunately after some stressful situations in high school, I developed an eating disorder. At 5' 9", I got down to 117 lbs. Certainly not healthy.

Growing up, I was chubby until about 9th grade. After a growth spurt, I was in good shape, but unfortunately after some stressful situations in high school, I developed an eating disorder. At 5' 9", I got down to 117 lbs. Certainly not healthy.
Once I got to college, I went up to a healthier weight range of around 130-135. There I remained, happily, until late 2006, when I gradually started gaining. I didn't really notice how much I had put on (I didn't own a scale) until I weighed myself at my parents' house. I had reached 170 lbs! At the time, I remember thinking I didn't want to get any closer to 200 lbs.
Even while attempting to eat healthy meals and going to the gym, the weight kept coming. I even went to the doctor, hoping they could find something "wrong" with me and fix it all.
I joined SparkPeople in January of 2010 and lost 30 lbs by early June. I was so proud and happy with myself! Then my husband and I had some job and financial stress that made the weight loss not such a priority, and I gained it back plus more. I reached my highest weight of 265 before getting back on track.
After trying to get pregnant without success, I went to the doctor again and described my symptoms. Finally I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and hypothyroidism. Together, these disorders are the reason for my weight gain and for the difficulty in losing the weight despite doing everything right. While treating the disorders, I have been able to lose close to 50 lbs from my highest weight and hope to continue to a healthy range.
My main reasons for getting fit are:
1) I want to have a healthy baby and pregnancy in the future
2) I want to love the way I look and be able to fit into the piles of smaller size clothes I have
3) I want to be strong. Not in the mental/emotional sense--I already have that. No, I mean in the physical, kick-ass sense. I want to beat people at arm-wrestling and be able to do real push-ups and pull-ups.
