I have been a large person since the age of 5 and could never understand how I could eat the same or less than my friends and weigh so much more than them. I gained 10 pounds a year, every year, since the age of 12 despite not growing any taller than I was then (5'4"), and even my doctor became frustrated after a lifetime of different medications and different diets, only to have them all fail. With PCOS, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, GERD, leaky gut, severe joint inflammation, extreme lack of energy, constant headaches, high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, chronic depression (since the age of 5)and chronic back issues (from an accident when I was 21), as well as emotional issues surrounding food, my weight issues were certainly compounded. And let's not even get started on the social anxiety that comes from being a morbidly obese woman in a society fixated on underweight models!

This past year, I decided to take charge because I was sick of the medical issues, the pain, social anxiety and depression, constantly thinking about food, the for-certain shortened lifespan, and the inability to do the things I once loved to do--biking, swimming, hiking and backpacking, volleyball, cross country skiing & snowshoeing, canoeing, helping my elderly mother with lawn care and basic household maintenance, and just going out with friends. I read every book and website I could find on my medical issues to understand the mechanisms behind the disease, devoured information on diets and the science behind how and why specific ways of eating worked, and read some very helpful and interesting information regarding addictions and how the brain in someone with an addiction works. What I discovered is that there is hope!

With all of my newfound knowledge and tools, I changed my way of eating and thinking about food. With the help of SparkPeople and Bright Line Eating (https://brightlineeating.com), I can now eat without thinking and obsessing about food all day. At the end of each day, I write down what I am eating the next day and commit to sticking to it. The next morning I review it and that is it--no more thinking about what I am going to eat for my next meal, no more wondering all day if I am going to fail yet again, no more obsessing over what goes into my mouth.

As far as what I eat, I follow the Keto diet, which has healed, and continues to heal, my body. I no longer have cravings and severe mood swings, my GERD and joint inflammation is gone, blood pressure is down, the PCOS, sleep apnea and leaky gut are healing, and I am sure the thyroid issues are starting to heal as well. I am no longer living with brain fog, I feel energized, and I am sleeping much better. For the first time in my life, I can see the end of the hellish tunnel I have been living in, and I am finally losing weight--47 pounds in 2 months just by eating alone!

I finally feel in charge of my life and my health, and my doctor is in total awe. I have actually educated him on some things, and he is changing his approach in helping his other patients facing the some of the same seemingly insurmountable issues that I had. I feel renewed and hopeful, to say the least, as I continue on this journey.
