You are teaching your grandsons how to play peacefully!! Such a powerful message and a life long skill.

Of course dogs have no clue about social distance, either, but that's why we have leashes, right? Seriously, my son says he doesn't have the heart to stop the neighbor kids from petting Carl... he feels sorry for them, they don't get a whole lot of fun outings these days.

It's the kids and young ones I feel worst about what this has done to their lives. I mean, us "older" folks are fine with living a little more proscribed existence, but for a young and healthy kid? Horrors of confinement!

Akrasia . . . Aristotle was so familiar with that decision to do "x" and then finding ourselves doing "y". And: yes, it makes us crazy.

Before I had kids I believed like a born-again feminist that differences between the sexes were entirely social constructs . . . and having had a boy and a girl, I changed my mind. It seems to me that the energy of little boys has almost been criminalized . . . or diagnosed as ADHD and drugged. Little girls are generally quieter and more compliant and accordingly "do better" academically. Until maybe they are socialized as pre-teens to realize that being smart is unattractive to boys and they dumb themselves down.

    Oh dear oh dear.

I am sure your little grandsons are getting the best possible nurturing and care in accordance with all their needs and individual interests!!

Clearly all the right things are happening at school AND at home!! So I bet you wonder why he doesn't like to read. Does he get corrected at school when he makes a mistake? Are the stories not interesting to him? A lot of school stories seem to be "girl" oriented . . . Maybe something about trucks or about camping would interest him more? My little boy loved to make his OWN books about topics that interested HIM!! (With a little help, of course!!)

Lots of little kids enjoy reading to the dog!! Generally the dog enjoys it and of course the dog never criticizes. It can be fun for a little kid to choose a book that he thinks the dog would enjoy . . . a book about other dogs, or about cats, for example!!
