I'm a 34 F living in Malibu, California with SuperHubby, a 6 year old daughter and a 3.5-yr old son.

I was always a really active kid and teenager. I played sports and danced and was always pretty petite. I ate whatever I wanted, was very fit and strong, and never weighed over 103 pounds (I'm Asian).

And then, so the story goes, I grew up...

It wasn't so much that I ate a ridiculous amount, it's just that I stopped moving. My highest post-baby weight was 143 pounds. Yes, I know, it's not enormous, but it was 40% more than I was used to my body being! That's pretty extreme!

When my youngest son was 2.5 years old and I was pretty sure we weren't going to be having any more kids, my body felt like it was mine again, in a way that it hadn't in nearly 6 years of being pregnant, nursing, and toting kids around. What did I want to do with my brand-spanking new body, now that it was mine again? I wanted to run. So I did.

I was asthmatic as a kid, so even though I was fit, I had a really hard time with endurance. The last time I ran a whole mile was when I did it for gym class when I was 13 years old, and even then, an older kid piggy-backed me for part of it. Not only was I a non-runner (ie. someone who didn't run), I was an anti-runner (ie. someone who thought that runners were quirky in the head at best, seriously lacking sound judgement more likely).

I have never been a runner, have never even had aspirations to run. I have knee problems, after all. And what about the asthma! I am, however, pretty impulsive. On 9/16/09, I went on a 4 mile run on my own as an experiment. I didn't die. I did it again over the next two days (2 and 3 miles respectively). Nope, still not dead. On 9/18/09, I decided to join a running club and on the very next day, I went on my first training run with them.

Two months after that, again on a whim (I registered not 24 hours before the event even!) I ran my first road race, a half-marathon. I hadn't specifically trained for a half-marathon and didn't even know what a taper was. I managed to do respectably.

Three months after that, I ran my first marathon. The following month, I ran another. I was scheduled and had trained for a third marathon, the San Francisco marathon, July 2010 as well, but was sick and couldn't make it. It would have been my 3rd marathon in 6 months.

I started playing tennis June 2010, and love it even more than I do running. I was asked to co-captain a USTA league team and hadn't picked up a racquet in 20 years. I did it anyway. In the last 3 months, my game has improved dramatically. Between team practices and matches, I usually end up playing 4-5 times a week. I would spend every waking hour on a tennis court if I could figure out a way to do so.

I quit running over the summer due to various non-running related injuries, but have worked with a physical therapist, and am now ready to get started again.

Again, on a whim (you get that I'm impulsive now, do you?), and having not run at all in 3.5 months, I just registered for a half marathon in 7 weeks' time. A hilly one, to boot. And I'm looking forward to it, big time.

In the last year, I've lost 29 pounds, have increased my endurance, have gotten stronger. I have visible ab muscles, I wear a size 0 or a 23 or 24 waist size in cute designer jeans. I'm back to eating alarming amounts of food. (Last Monday's workout burned over 2100 calories according to my HRM!) But that's just the bonus stuff.

In the last year, I've amazed myself. I am discovering myself every day. I know now that my body can and will do pretty much anything I ask of it. I've inspired a lot of the people around me. My energy is through the roof. I've learned to make time and space for myself. I was so atuned to hearing the needs and voices of everyone around me; I've had to relearn how to hear myself.

I am having the time of my life!

If you have a goal, any sort of goal, or even if it's not quite a solid goal yet, more of a musing, a "hmmm, what if...?" sort of a thing, start today. Really. You'll astonish yourself.

I run 6 days a week (about 45-55 miles) when I'm in training.

I play tennis as often as I can, usually 4-5 days a week (if I'm lucky!) and am co-captain of a USTA league team.

I strength train twice a week, because I love feeling strong.

I do yoga twice a week.

    Well done on the half-marathon! Where/how do you train? We've had beautiful fall weather here and to be honest, I keep wanting to go for a nice, long run instead of do Insanity inside.

    So tonight I'm gonna do it! You've inspired me! And you can bet I'll eat a coconut afterwards.
