Losing weight is easy... I've done it hundreds of times. I hope this is the last time.

Open a magazine these days and you will read about how to lose all your weight by next week--or so it seems. Headlines proclaim that some new wonder concoction will speed up your metabolism, block carbs, melt away the fat around your belly, give you a 4.0 GPA and restore all your broken relationships.

All you need is enough money to pass across the counter to the pharmacist or some health food guru and all your problems will be solved.

Well I've been in the business of trying to lose weight for a long time and I'll let you in on a little secret...

Ask yourself the question I've had to ask. How long did it take? How long did it take to put on the weight you are carrying around? How many "Oh, just one won't hurt" or, worst of all, "Just one MORE won't hurts," did it take to get you to the point where you just could not ignore the image in the mirror any more?

There is a problem on our continent. We are blessed by food to the point where we are cursed by the stuff we eat. In the same magazine that promises you that all you've got to do is take a pill or drink some potion, you'll find some other company telling you that if you eat their snack food or drink their beverage, you'll become more handsome, beautiful, attractive, approachable, youthful, "with it." (Pick one or all.)

I won't insult your intelligence by telling you the secret we all know about that kind of claim.

Here's the truth. It will take at least as long to get extra weight off as it did to put it on. And you may already be handsome, beautiful, attractive, approachable, youthful, with it. (Pick one or all.) Eating won't change that. Maybe you need to work on some of those things, but this is not the place to debate that.

So, what is the answer? What is the secret formula that will solve our collective weight problem? (In case you haven't been paying attention, they tell us that, by next year, 71% of all Americans will suffer from obesity and overweight. Up where I live, in Canada, it is probably about the same.)

Here is the secret to solving your weight problem and mine: eat less calories than you burn from day-to-day. That's it.

If you are a healthy human being, more or less, eating less calories than you burn should help you with your quest for better health.

Problem is, we love to eat. We love the taste, We like the way it feels in our mouths. We like the way it looks on the plate, in the bag, on TV or wherever. So what can we do?

Exercise. It burns calories.

"But, I've never done that." If you do it today, you will have done it once, and tomorrow you won't have that excuse.

Having said all that, it is incumbent on me to say that neither I, nor this site, purport to offer medical advice. You are reading opinions. If you damage yourself because you didn't go to a real, live, genuine, Hippocratic Oath-taking medical practitioner, someone ought to come over there and flick your ear.

You may have gotten into this alone but, to get out, you cannot do it alone. Your doctor is the FIRST person to see if you have a weight problem and need guidance. Sometimes we have health circumstances that make diet and exercise alone only part of the solution. Check with your doctor. If you get the go-ahead, then... Well, go ahead.

SPARK PEOPLE is a good place to come to next for support. I've only just started here. I intend to stick around a long time because, even when the weight is gone, I have discovered that I need help to keep it gone.

I hope that soon, you'll see a lot less of me.

Thanks for answerig my last comment. Wow you lost 5.5 pounds from using the EA Sports active. How many times a week do you use it, and how many minutes? I may need to get one of those soon!

I saw you on the writers workshop team I wanted to invite you to another team (okay so it's mine!) because I'm about to start Script Frenzy this April and need something to keep me on track. The workshop will keep me writing but I need a challenge to go with it and yet want some people who know what it's like to combine writing and staying fit. The team is called, "The Challenge" and can be found on my sparks page. Hope to see you there. I'm starting a new challenge for us this April.
