At 48, my life is full of ups and downs. Sadly enough my weight has been more of an "UP" than a down since my marriage in 1995. I want to feel pretty again, and feel better in general. Now that I have grandchildren, I am more concerned about living longer and watching them grow. Gardening is my favorite hobby, but baking and cooking is a close second.

I find that I blog more on my regular blog page http://www.shelklinger.blogspot.com
than I do on the spark blog. Feel free to check it out if you want to read about my life away from food.

I have a very important deducation to attend in September and would therefore like to lose 20 lbs. by then. I plan on using mini-goals instead of my end goal because I feel like I can actually ACHIEVE this goal. Little by little, my weight will change.

This CAN be done. And it will.

My Goals:
1. Look good

2. Feel good

3. Be able to wear cute clothes again!

4. Delay the effects of osteoarthritis as long as possible by exercise, healthy eating, and a full 8 hours of sleep each night.

My Program:
I am not grazing between meals, which has already made a big difference. Soda is no longer part of my life, even though it was diet for the most part. My workout tapes will now be used 3x per week.

Personal Information:
My name is Shelly (I go by Shel) and I am from central Illinois. My life is a series of mini-dramas on a day-by-day basis as I have elderly parents that are in bad physical condition due to an automobile accident. My grandson is an important part of my life as well. Even though I'm nearly 47 years old, I am going to college (just a few classes at a time) in order to reach one of my "Before I Die" goals, which is to get a degree in Horticulture. I really don't know what I want to do with my life professionally.

Other Information:
Take good care of the Earth, as she is the only one that we have.

Being a grandma ROCKS!!!

Be thankful for something every day.

Amazing! My daughter's name is pronounced EXACTLY the same way. This is the first time in 9 years I've come across anyone who pronounces it the same way. If I had a dollar for everytime someone called her ah LON ah instead of ah LANE ah, I would be rich!! I showed her your comment on my page and she was so excited. She also likes to read the same sort of books. My youngest is a Junie B. Jones fan. I am rapidly approaching bankruptcy trying to support our reading habits!!

Hello! I thought I'd take a peek at your page. Imagine my surprise to see a picture of someone named Alana! My 9 year old daughter is named Alana. That is not a name you come across often. Anyway, good luck with your program.

    Love You

Shel, welcome to this new Sparkpeople journey and to the Gardeners team! There's a tremendous amount of support and advice available on this site, and the people that you'll meet are very caring. I'm so impressed with your gardening expertise, would love to see some photos of your gardens. I disagree with your doctor that gardening doesn't count towards exercise & weightloss. Combine it with some aerobics and strength training and you should have a great balance. Hugs, Joni
