I am a psychologist by profession, having retired at the beginning of this year. This was an early retirement, at the age of 64, two years earlier than I had expected to quit work. This early retirement was, in large part, necessitated by health problems brought on by my overweight condition. I am newly diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and also have developed lymphedema in my legs. At my weight, everything is hard for me. I use a cane or a walker to get around, and I am feeling old before my time. I am determined to reverse the health conditions that I can and feel better physically, psychologically, and spiritually. One important key to this is to achieve a healthier weight.

My Goals:
Enter a summary of your goals, or just a few you would like to share. I want to use mindfulness skills to be aware of what I am eating and how I am thinking. By taking this approach, I want my process of losing weight and regaining my health to be one of partnership of mind, body, and spirit, and not one of struggle. My goal is it to eat 1600-1700 calories a day, at most. That may sound like a lot, but I weigh nearly 400 pounds, so the Spark people say I can eat this many. Actually, so far most days I haven't had that many. But, it helps me to not get into "fear of famine" mode and overeat out of panic!

My Program:
Having tried many formal "programs" over my dieting history, I have now decided that many healthy eating plans can help a person lose weight. I've been successful on many of them: Adkins, The Flat Belly Diet, Weight Watchers, and Diet Workshop to name only a few! However, I've learned, to my chagrin, that none of these "work" if you go right back to your old ways once you lose the weight. I believe that once I address the mental, emotional, and spiritual issues which need to be "overhauled," then I will know, from many long years of study (and a two-time "life membership in Weight Watchers) what a healthy way of eating is.

So, I am putting together my own program, a combination of several favorite books: *The Four-Day Win* by Martha Beck, *Foodist* by Darya Pino, *The Mindful Diet* by Wolever, and *Soul Vows* by Connor.

To manage my food intake, I have decided to return to my first ever successful weight-loss strategy, that of counting calories.
