I've been trying - well, okay, thinking about - losing weight for the last few years. I've been unsuccessful and in fact, tend to gain weight rather than lose weight when I actively try. Really my biggest goal is to become healthy and fit by eating better and being more physically active. I guess I've just never put in the time to take care of me as I'm usually busy taking care of others. Now I'm ready to take care of me so I can continue caring for others!

My Goals:
My goal, along with losing at least 60 pounds, is to take better care of myself. I eat lots of junk foods, drink nothing but soda, and get little to no physical exercise. I'm ready to start caring for myself as much as I care for others by watching what I eat and doing more to be physically fit.

My Program:
My current plan is to slowly cut out the junk food. Over the last few months I've been eating more fruits and vegetables and have been buying more organic food. As it has been a long cold winter here, I haven't done much for physical activity, but it's time to dust off the TaeBo tapes! I'm also looking forward to long walks and hitting the tennis courts when the weather finally gets better.

Personal Information:

Other Information:
I've an avid reader so maybe with books on tape I can make my walks even longer. I also have a 12-year-son who needs some exercise so we will get to do even more things together! My thought in getting healthier came from my realization that my body is basically a container for my soul. Something that important really should have a much better container than this and should be better kept!

I guess I feel like it's more strength training, at least for me. That could be because I'm pretty slow at it so I think I'm building up my strength but don't really feel like I get a workout as if I were doing kickboxing or something. That might change as I get more into it and better at it with less stopping time, though. I notice that the people who are far more experienced than me are getting a very different kind of workout than I am, they are clearly getting more cardio than I am, but they are also going faster and longer on the rocks than I am. I'm not sure that all makes sense?!

I ran across your post re: Rock climbing through a search. I have been climbing in our local gym about twice a week for, ummm...I guess a month or so now. I really enjoy it, but it's still quite challenging. I'm making progress all the time, though.

I was searching because I'm trying to decide whether it should count as cardio or strength training. As you know, there are lots of breaks, so I don't know if I should count it as cardio. What do you think?

Feel free to sparkmail me, or leave a comment on my page if you want to chat more about climbing. emoticon

I'm thinking of trying rock climbing at a local climbing gym. I've heard mixed reports; some say it's a great way to exercise and get in shape and other says you need to already be in shape. Anyone out there tried it who can give me some real advice? All honest feedback appreciated!
