Introduction Text I joined SparkPeople when I retired from teaching in 2008. I was a high school biology teacher and still miss the day to day interactions with the students. I have had a terrible time losing weight even though I've done all the "right" things, mostly because of some health issues that result in an incredibly slow metabolism. I've talked to several doctors and also "professionals" from SparkPeople, followed all their suggestions faithfully, all with no results. Since entering early menopause followed closely with having my thyroid removed in 2001 I have gained about 3 pounds per year, not enough to even see on the scale from week to week, but enough that it definitely shows years later. I don't give up easily so keep trying, keep looking for the magic "something" that will work for me.

I don't need fast weight loss, just consistent. I would like to lose 60 pounds - not an easy task for me because of some health issues but I don't give up easily!

I am watching my calories by eating only "healthy" foods in accordance with my doctor's recommendations and trying to get more exercise. I think I own about every exercise DVD and Wii program out there and also recently bought an activity tracker. I've always enjoyed walking as my main form of exercise when both my body and the weather co-operate. For me the secret is audiobooks - I only listen when I exercise so I'm motivated because I want to hear more of the story.

I was widowed in 1999 and remarried in 2002. I spent the next 5 years teaching High School biology in a very small school 67 miles from home until I retired in 2008. We recently moved to Grants Pass, Oregon, a difficult move because my husband had lived in our other house for over 40 years. Now we're looking forward to our new life in our new home.

I love to read, I own a lot of audio books and like to listen to them when I exercise. I mostly like fantasy, mystery, or young adult novels. I got interested in YA books while teaching high school and continued reading them after retirement. I also try to keep my mind active by playing RPG computer games.
