With less than 1in 3 in the UK and 1 in 10 in the USA (a significant portion eating NONE which I don't even understand what they are eating) the conservative recommended 5 isn't being reached. Let alone the number we receive real health benefits at. I am at 13 portions today plus white potatoes which don't count but are still nutritious. We average at least 8 a day, most days more.
