Unexpected Trail Race

Yesterday I ran my first trail race, a 10K, at the local conservation area. I was browsing through the race listing on the Running Room website on Friday night and saw this event and decided to sign up. I had no idea that it was going to be a trial race since there wasn't much info available of the site. It just had the event name, the start time and that you could either do the 5K or the 10K. Although thinking about it now the logo does give somewhat of a clue LOL! I had big goals of running a sub 50 minute race and printed out a nice pace band for myself to help me achieve that goal.
Once I started running it became apparent that my new goal would be to finish the race. I don't know how people who run trail races do it. It was much more challenging than a road race. I was constantly dodging tree roots, rocks and mud holes. About 90% of the trail was through the forest which I will admit was very tranquil and relaxing for a Saturday morning run. Most challenging was running up and down the hills since they were so steep. To make matters worse it was pouring rain yesterday morning making the trail incredibly slippery. One guy fell in front on me into a a huge pile of mud face first when another runner was trying to pass him. By the end I was completely soaked, freezing and incredibly dirty. I'm not sure if my running shoes will ever be white again. I finished with a time of 55:00 which I was happy with all things considered. It was fun and challenging, but I think I'll stick with road races from now on.
