90 Day Bootcamp: Reflections on Week 1...

Today is the end of week one of my 90 day bootcamp program.
This past week has been amazing in so many ways. I have changed so many things about the way I eat and drink this past week that my diet is unrecognizable from the old diet I used to eat.
This past week I DID NOT have one single soda. Not one.. This was what I THOUGHT was going to be the hardest part about all of this..but it wasn't. This was EASY to do. I used to drink 6-8 regular sodas a day. At 150 calories a pop that's around 800 calories a day. Or more. Depending on how many I drank. It's also the cause of my blood sugar issues I'm sure of it. My blood sugar was VERY unstable before I started this program. This past week it was stable, and I didn't feel nearly as out of whack as I used to. That's a WONDERFUL thing!! (There is Type 2 Diabetes on both sides of my family, and I had Gestational Diabetes with both of my pregnancies...I've already been diagnosed with Pre-Diabetes so I'm hoping that changing my diet and adding exercise will stop the progression to full blown Diabetes.)
I have drank just about a gallon of water every day this past week. Of course this means I have spent the majority of the week when I wasn't exercising, or drinking water...in the bathroom. I'm starting to think that I should count each trip to the potty as a squat...LOL. I could rack up some serious points for 50 or so extra squats in a day.
The greatest part for me so far about all of the water I've been drinking is I can really tell my skin is looking much clearer and healthier. That's a definite plus!!
As far as my eating goes...I've eaten 5-8 servings of fruits and veggies every day this past week. Lots of salads, and fresh fruit, steamed veggies and the like. I haven't had pasta ONCE this past week, and any bread I have eaten has been the light whole grain variety. It's funny how I don't even really miss Pasta that much. My proteins have come from Egg whites, and lean chicken breasts. It's amazing how good Egg whites can be with tabasco and picante sauce. Egg whites are the lowest calorie, and highest quality protein you can eat, and if you get the liquid egg whites in the carton that are pasteurized you can add them directly to smoothies. YUM.
I have not had a single drop of Alcohol in 9 days. That is HUGE for me. I'm a girl that LOVES her Jack and Coke. I thought this was going to be tough to give up the alcohol for 90 days but it's funny how when you're focused on a goal it keeps you on track. I read in several articles that when you drink alcohol it makes it impossible for your body to burn fat for 72 hours. Not to mention what it does to your blood sugar levels. It causes everything you eat to instantly turn into sugars in your blood stream and be stored as fat. YUCK!! I can't imagine putting something in my body that would negate all of my hard work and healthy eating for the next 3 days.
I logged about 450 minutes of Cardio this past week and another 300 minutes of strength training. Yesterday I actually RAN on the treadmill for a full two minutes. I know that doesn't sound like much but it's a START for great things to come. I'm hoping to double or triple my running time this next week and double it every week after that. Running is an amazing way to SCHORCH calories! Today is my one day off from exercise this week, and we are putting up the pool and cleaning it so I'm bound to burn some calories out there in the heat doing all of that. I was afraid to take today off because I was scared I might lose some ground taking a day off but I know my body needs some rest. I'm pretty sore from all of the working out this past week so I'm sure my body will thank me for it tonight when I can actually roll over in bed without groaning in pain....LOL. Tomorrow I hit the weights again, and I'm hoping to add a pound or two of iron to my regimen this week.
All in all this has been an amazing week. I have accomplished things this week I NEVER thought I would be able to do. It's amazing what a positive attitude, and focusing on goals can do for you.
When I really THINK about the way I used to eat it really makes me sad. I never even gave a second thought to what I was putting in my body. To me the way I eat now is a way of loving myself. I DESERVE to be healthy and happy and fit.
This is a means to an end. No shortcuts here...just hard work.
In a way I have become my own best friend. The way I used to TALK to myself was terrible. I said things to myself in my head that I wouldn't say to anyone else ever. Now I say nice things to myself. Changing my inner dialogue has been the most positive and important change this past week I think. When you slip up and eat something you shouldn't(and you will) and instead of saying something terrible to yourself you are kind and encouraging it makes all the difference.
So...one week down and 12 more to go. It's going to be an AMAZING journey I can tell.
Changes in my body this week:
Sleeping better than I have in AGES
Lost 4.2 pounds
Lost 2 inches off my waist
No more afternoon sugar crash
Reduced cravings for sugar and salty foods.
This site has been a HUGE resource to me this past week to help keep me on track with my eating and exercise, and best of all it's FREE! I was a member of E-diets for 6 months and paid around 20 bucks a month for a service that wasn't HALF as useful as Sparkpeople!!
