Day 11 ~ Eat with awareness

The next 10 days are going to address “conscious eating” are you ready?

Have you ever finished off your favorite candy bar and then thought where did it go? Maybe you fixed your plate, sat down at the table, and the next thing you know it was clean, yet you have no recollection of eating the entire plate? This type of unconscious eating can wreck havoc on your weight loss efforts.

Remember the two purposes for eating? (It was w/in the last 10 days!). To fuel your body and to appreciate flavors! When you eat for fuel, staying conscious makes you aware of when you are full.

“When you eat with no awareness, you simply miss out on the flavor, texture, and sensation of your food. Because you didn’t “get” the taste you wanted, you may still yearn for it, so you eat more. Train yourself to slow down and spend more time with your food rather than wolfing it down on the run.”

Today’s assignments:
• Prepare yourself for having a “mindful-eating” meal. This can be done by setting a table with your good china and silverware, lighting a candle, and playing quiet music in the background. Although that seems a little extravagant to me, so I think we should just make a place at the table instead of the other places we tend to eat! (On the couch, or in the recliner in front of the TV maybe.) Describe your setting here.

• Sit down for your meal. While you’re eating, don’t do any other activities—just focus entirely on the food. Notice details such as the food appearance, flavors and textures, and even the temperature. Record your observations.

• Add a few notes about how it feels to eat a meal using that much focus and total awareness.

My Special Notes for Today:

I try my best to eat at the table and not in front of the TV. My new thing is to have the TV on in the background just loud enough to hear it but I have my back to it while it is on in the other room.

I do set our table with placemats and cloth napkins to enjoy the meal a little better and enjoy the company of my family. I find I tend not to overeat because of the atmosphere and the good talking I do with my family.
