Finally a Diagnosis for Mom
Thursday, October 16, 2008
Well, after more than 3 weeks of doubt, fear, & lots of Prayers, we finally have a diagnosis for what my Mom has been dealing with.
The illness is called High-Grade Myelodysplastic Syndrome, which is a big bunch of words for pre-leukemia. Without treatment it will quickly be true Leukemia, according to her Hematologist. The suggested treatment is Decidapine, a chemo type drug but not such a harsh drug like the chemo many people endure...very low incidence of side effects, no hair loss etc. She will have a Mediport surgically inserted in a week or so, then begin treatment which will be Mon. thru Fri. once a month....She is less weak than before, still very tired, etc. Apparently, as she is a breast cancer survivor, the chemo & radiation she had in 2002 til Jan. 2003 put her at high risk of later developing the MDS....there are several classic symptoms of MDS, & she has many of them.
Although we in the family are glad to have a name for what she has been dealing with, there are still unanswered questions.
We will keep praying, hoping, & praying more, that she will be alright.
I'll keep the news coming as I have any.
