Fad Diets

Why do people insist on doing Fad diets? I ask this question as someone who has tried some myself. I was talking to an acquaintance the other day, and she happened to notice that I have lost weight. We started talking about weight loss, and she mentioned that she is doing the Master Cleanse to lose weight. She also stated that she did the cleanse for 14 days (!) last month.

The Master Cleanse is a concoction of freshly squeezed lemons, a small amount of maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. Yes, you read that right, Cayenne pepper, the spicy stuff. The worse part about this "diet" is that that's all you consume for the length of the fast. This poor girl drank that icky concoction and didn't eat anything for 14 days. Now let me be completely honest. I have tried this diet. It was none too fun. I did it for maybe 5 days. The burning sensation in my stomach was probably the worst part, second only to the explosive diarrhea.

I have tried my fair share of fads. Eventually I realized that they just DO NOT WORK. Once you get off the au courant plan, and start eating normally again the weight creeps back up. Usually those pounds also show up with of few of their buddies. When I think back to how desperately I wanted to lose weight, and yet I didn't realize how easy it could be if I just did it the right way, and consistently.

So now I watch what I eat. I use portion control and monitor my calories. I drink plenty of water. I eat lots of fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables. I bake lightened versions of my favorite desserts and I'm always finding new healthy items at the grocery store. Last night I ate Tilapia with Citrus Basil Sauce with Couscous and Zucchini. Does that sound like deprivation? I exercise a lot. I have lost 48 pounds. It wasn't always easy, but let me say it was a lot easier than doing the Master Cleanse.

I told her that all I've been doing is watching what I eat and working out daily she seemed skeptical. I can only hope that one day she, and others like her, will realize just how easy losing weight can be. I just hope she finds her inner spark.
