Made My Day!

Monday, July 27, 2009

I had to drive my Daughter to work on Friday. I took my dog Sarge with me since he was giving me "that look". We drive through Bouquet Canyon, one of my favorite areas. On the way back, I pulled off the road, so Sarge and I could take a walk. He borrowed a tree, as I was looking around and enjoying the beauty. This area is in the forest. I kept hearing a bird chirping, and I was trying to locate the bird. I then spotted two Wild Canaries. A female and male. The male was beautiful. He had a red chest, and the female was yellowish. We rarely see the red breasted canaires. So this was a real treat.

Later, the same day, I was swimming in our pool. I kept hearing two birds squawking about. There they were, dive bombing this big bird at the top of the tree. I realized the big bird was a Falcon. 2nd time we have had this bird in our yard. They usually stay in the open part of the desert, not far from us. So this is thrilling he/she is hanging around. For me anyway. I don't think the others birds are thrilled.

The Good Lord just keeps making my day!!

Awesome day! I was out mowing at my mom's the other day (riding mower, several acres) and I almost ran over a baby meadowlark sitting on the ground. I stopped to try and figure out why he was there, and realized that there were 3 more sitting on a branch right by my head. They were lined up like they were posing. I managed to shoo the little one off of the ground and back into the tree without touching him, but not without making his mama very mad at me! First time I've been divebombed by a meadowlark! I didn't want the little guy to end up catfood. It was so incredible to be that close to those babies. I stayed and watched for quite awhile. They were getting flying lessons, and eventually all 4 flew off.

    Wow!
We live near an area with Red Tail Hawks and Turkey Vultures, but there was a year when we had an owl home in one of our old trees. It could get pretty scary for the little birds!
Your blog was wonderful. Very Animal Planet or Discovery Channel!
    Thank you!

I love watching the birds that live aroundus. We get different species than you do, but I understand the thrill when you spot a bird that you don't frequently see. In our area, ospreys are making a comeback and I was fortunate to see several on a recent trip to the Jersey shore.

    Enjoy!!!
