Frustrating Football Weekend

Sunday, September 13, 2009

There are some weekends nothing goes right on the gridiron. First Notre Dame lost to Michigan. That's bad for two reasons. My father graduated from Notre Dame and The Ohio State University's (OSU) main rival in the Big Ten is the University of Michigan. (This explanation is for those of you who do not follow Big Ten football).

Ohio State's big game was last night against No. 3 ranked USC. They lost in the last few minutes 18-15. Few people even gave OSU much of a chance. They played well for most of the game and had a chance to win a big game for a change, but unfortunately they weren't able to pull it off. They had their chances but made some decisions in play calling that some of us are really wondering about. When I went grocery shopping today, a number of people were talking about the game. For those of you not familiar with Ohio State football, they have played in 2 National Championships in the past few years which they lost, rather spectacularly. They lost their bowl game last year against Texas and basically have not won a big game for a number of years. They did win the National Championship in 2002!

Today the Cleveland Browns lost another home opener. This time to the Vikings with Bret Favre who is rather old for a starting quarterback. He didn't look old today against the Browns. Rather than watch much of the game I phoned my mother and one of my best friends and spoke to them.

What does frustrating football have to do with Spark People?

All the teams I mentioned will complete the football season. They'll win games and they'll lose games but they will keep playing.

I often feel my weight loss journey is like these football teams, especially Ohio State. I did manage to lose around 20 pounds since I joined SP. To me that's like winning the National Championship in football. But I'm not doing so well in losing more weight. I'm keeping most of the weight off, which is like OSU having another winning season. I'm just not winning any more major games. There are times that this can be as frustrating as watching Ohio State lose by 3 points in a game they almost Won.

On the 19th I will reach my two year SP Anniversary. I'm happy with the progress I have made but I still want to reach my goal weight and win my own National Championship Game. Like OSU, I do want to win the Big One! In the meantime, I'll keep playing the game, watching what I eat, drinking my water, and trying to get my exercise in. I'll have small weight losses and some gains but I'll keep playing until I win, and then keep playing just as hard to stay at that goal weight!

    Dear Helen!

You are doing great! I mean it! You've lost 20 pounds and have been able to keep it off. That is wonderful! A lot of people I know would be thrilled with that amount of success. But I understand that you want to lose more, and I know that you can do it!

I loved your blog and the pictures about your trip! It looks like you had a great time despite the missed ferries, etc. Good for you!

And thank you for your comment on my blog! I am with you about not liking things that show bulges. I have to choose whether I want to wear pants that make my butt look good with a baggy shirt to cover the muffin top, or pants that don't give me a muffin top so I can wear a cute shirt, but not have cute pants. lol.

You are doing great and I know you can bust through this plateau!

    Cheers,
    Heidi

Helen, I have to agree with all the comments. You just have to "chin up" "suck it up" and put on "your game face" and keep on trucking.

Small goals obtained are WINS for sure. You are a winner already and we all remain players in the battle of the bulge.

We are really all winners because we continue to "play the game". WE ROCK and you my sister chick ROCK!!!!!!!!

EXCELLENT analogy, Helen. Win some. Lose some. But... never fear, cuz' you, yourself, and YOU, are a WINNING team!! Body, Mind, & Soul, my friend, you're a WINNING combination!!
