Sometimes it Pays to Just Do It!

Sunday, September 20, 2009

Yesterday The Ohio State University was playing the University of Toledo at Cleveland Stadium. I had tried to get tickets with no luck. There was a big Buckeye Bash scheduled prior to the game. I decided I wanted to spend the day with some fellow Buckeyes so I decided to go down to the Bash by myself. I took a folding OSU chair, a water bottle, and some healthy snacks so I could watch the game on the big screen they had where the Bash was. It was exciting getting to see Archie Griffin (the only 2 time Heisman Trophy Winner), the OSU Cheerleaders, and most of all the OSU Band known as The Best Damned Band In The Land! I really enjoyed all the hoopla and the excitement of being around so many Buckeye fans.

I stopped by the Cleveland Alumni Club and I was asking about tickets. To my surprise there were still some tickets available to buy. I waited util the person with the tickets came back and bought one. I then called my hubby to let him know that I was actually going to the game. I bought a hambrger for $2 and ate it before I left for the stadium as everything is more expensive there.

I took my chair and my empty water bottle back to the car since I didn't need the chair and you are not allowed to bring any containers inside the stadium. Walking to the stadium and up the ramp to the section my seats were in was a bit of a hike. I then had to climb up quite a few steep steps to get to my seat. It's a good thing I am somewhat fit. My row of seats was 4th from the very top of the stadium. I had a great view of the field and didn't even need to use the binoculars I brought. My only complaint is that we were on the shady part of the field and the stadium is right on the lake. With the wind blowing it was a bit chilly, even with the sweater I had brought. There were some very nice people sitting next to me that I got to talk to. I also got to meet some nice people at the Bash.

The only thing I bought at the game was a bottle of water. I had brought some dried fruit and unsalted nuts as a snack which I ate at the game. Many people at the Bash and game were drinking alcohol but I stuck with water. I had had a filling and healthy breakfast before leaving for Cleveland. When I got home I had a frozen Kashi dinner which was low in calories. I walked about 3.5 miles so got plenty of exercise in as well.

The sponsors called the game "Rockets and Red Glare" after the Toledo Rockets, and the Red trim on the OSU helmets. I was lucky enough to get 2 free Tshirts advertising that.

At half time the band came on. They marched in spelling O H I O in block letters. They played a few of the fan favorites including Hang On Sloopy. Then to my delight they did a double Script Ohio. This is something definitely worth seeing. They actually spell out Ohio in script letters and a tuba dots the I. It's unlike anything else that any other college band does.

After our band performed, the Toledo band took the field since they were considered the home team even though about 95% of the crowd was dressed in scarlet. They had a flag group and dancers along with their band. There was plenty to watch as they were performing, but it was hard to understand what they were playing.

OSU won this game 38-0. They were ready to get over their disappointing loss from last week. To make the day even better, USC lost to Washington!

After the game I got to watch the OSU players gather in the middle of the field to pray and then they went by the stands where the band was and the bland played the OSU Alma Mater, which the players and I sang along to.

This was my only chance to see an Ohio State game this year and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to see and experience it It was a special day!

Moral of story, don't be afraid to do something on your own as you never know what good things you may get to experience!

This is awesome Helen! So glad you had the opportunity to go to the game and had a great time too. You are so right about not hesitating to go alone, as there are bound to be some kind of surprises ahead of you...rather it's having a good time, meeting others, or just plain reminincing back in the days.

Also you chose my favorite kind of snacks...dried fruits and nuts! Oh, I love this combo! Every so often, I would add mini pretzels too...just to have a bit of 'salt' to counteract the sweetness of the dried fruits!

Good for You! Sounds like a blast! Is that the same stadium that the Indians play baseball at? I remember being at a stadium in the downtown Cleveland area but it was a baseball game.
My team, MSU, lost AGAIN...but it was another exciting game. One of these days I am going to get to see them play in person, never have!
    Have a good week,

Sooo emoticon that those nearly impossible tickets just *HAPPENED* into your eager hands, Sweetie!! Sorry you had to brave the chilly weather though, and emoticon on getting JUST the emoticon water too!! That was a VERY wise 'play' you made on eating that emoticon b4 the game!! Ya' know...? Boozing it up b4 and during a game...? DUH!! Just isn't SMART, but... some people'll find ANY reason to emoticon get the guzzlin' sloshin' sloppin' down.

I'd a' loved to see the marching bands doing CRISP formations- spelling out in BLOCK & SCRIPT, Helen!! Now THAT'S Military style!! That's what I went to SEE with EVERY single company that graduated from my dad's command!! Nothin' gives me goosebumps like men- I don't care if it's kilts & bagpipes- MARCHING!!

What a day!! What a glorious day!! Thanks for sharing, Sweets!! emoticon
