To My Fellow Caninie Lovers

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

On yesterday I responded to the Spark Cafe blog - tell me a secret. My secret was that I left my dog in a nice neighborhood but told my Mom that I gave him to a nice family. See my Mom wanted Simba, our Golden Retriever, to be an outside dog because he had gotten very big. I didn't want that my best friend and I took him to this housing subdivision that we passed on our way to and from school. It had big houses and it was gated to cars. It has a security guard and a walk fence by the running path.

I got an email from a community member and I posted this reply to my secret -

***I got a letter from one of our community members about my secret so let me take a second and clarify.

I did this action when I was 14 or 15 yrs old. I am not sure but I know I had just completed the 9th grade. I was used to seeing stray dogs roaming in our neighborhood, so I though that it was a good idea to take Simba (from the Lion King)...that lets you know I really was thinking like a child, to a nice neighborhood and one of those families would take good care of him. Better care than he would have gotten having to live in our yard. Our house had an apartment complex behind at and there was only a chain link fence separating the yards. Sometimes when we would let Simba out back the complex kids would throw stuff over at him and taunt him from the fence. My sister and I got into fights with them a few times because they were bothering him in our yard.

I definitely didn't know at the time it was a crime and in my mind I thought I was doing something to make it better for him. ***

I promise I am an animal lover, I just didn't want Simba to live in the backyard and our house was small for him and all of us to be in. Look I have had 3 dogs, Lara Croft (another dog who I got right after Simba because she was going to be small in stature, unfortunately she passed away from old age 3 yrs ago.) But living with me and my toddler are Rusty our short haired Dachshund and Mason a Bichon Frise. I intentionally got dogs that would stay small in size so I would never have to have them live in the back yard. I love having my babies in the house with me. If i didn't have my son next to me in bed they would be there.

I am a dog lover also. I am sure it was a very hard thing to do--it is a hard thing to do at any age.
