The Nursing Home

Monday, November 16, 2009

Today was a gloomy, rainy day. I got my chores done early and we went to visit my dad at the nursing home.

I wasn't too thrilled when I saw the outside of the building but was pleased to see that they had instead spent money where it would be most beneficial - in patient care. They had a lot of staff and they were great.

The rooms were nicely decorated. Modern. Cheery and clean.

The food looked good. Not skimpy like some places I have seen. For lunch he had chicken fried steak with gravy, Brussels sprouts, mashed sweet potatoes, a roll, pudding, and iced tea.

Dad is doing better than the last time I saw him. He is thin and looks like he has been through the ringer but he was more alert and less drowsy. He was less depressed and not as irritable. He even laughed sometimes and seemed like his old self. He still asks God to take him "home" every night but he also is hopeful that he might be able to get back to his home on earth.

I'm glad we went today. I am encouraged.

I'm glad you like the nursing home. I know how you agonized over it. It also makes me think of the adage, "It's not what's on the outside but the inside that counts." or something like that. You know what I mean:-)

I am so glad to hear he's getting better. I know he wants to go, but maybe his work here isn't done yet.

A good nursing home is a God-send. They are so hard to find.
I am sure your visit made you feel a bit more at ease knowing he has good care and is starting to feel a bit more like himself.
It sounds like a very good day, indeed.

emoticon I'm so glad you like the place, and it sounds like he does too. More than that, he knows he has a loving and attentive daughter. There is no better legacy. I'm so glad you got to see him. I know I would give just about anything if I could visit with my parents just one more day. I hope each moment will be a good memory.

It sounds very positive. He is getting used to his new home and eating well. That has to make him feel better, and having other people around. Hopefully he will appreciate it more in the future.

Thanks for the good news post, Sis. I worry about Dad, too. Do you think you could suggest a more Beachy menu, though? The only thing either one of us could steal off his plate is the brussels sprouts. I'd have to fight you for them.

So glad you had a positive visit with your dad. I'm sure that eases your mind. Gloomy here, too. For the next several days. But I'm just happy we're not getting frozen precipitation yet!!
