Holiday Blues?

Monday, November 23, 2009

My Dad died in 2000. One would think that after 9 years the empty feeling of Thanksgiving without him would have passed, or at least numbed somewhat. But it hasn't. Because Thanksgiving is just that......a day of giving thanks, our family does the following and it works wonderfully!!! My Dad loved to laugh and was a very upbeat and funny man. The last thing he would want is for us to be shedding tears and sitting around depressed because he was no longer with us. So we have done this every year since he died...........at the end of the meal, while we are all together around the table, we take turns sharing a funny story about my Dad (and believe me, there are alot of them!) By the time we have gone around to everyone present, we are wiping away tears of laughter.....not sadness. It is exactly what he would want!!!

I would have loved to have met your dad. I lost my mom that same year and you are right: family celebrations are just not the same without her presence. She had a way of making everyone feel welcomed and special and loved. I'm glad that your family remembers your father the way you do. It will make future generations feel connected to him

You and your family always seem to find a positive way to look at things. That is a lovely tradition, am sure your granddaughter will learn lots of things about your father in this way. Have a great Thanksgiving!!!

What a commendable way to remember you father. It is a wonderful way to pass on the family remembrances to the younger ones, and to keep the wonderful memories alive for you and your family. Thanks for sharing.

I admire you and your family. I agree whole heartedly with remembering the beautiful bits and pieces one can of a deceased family member or friend. I don't like dwelling on the negative, it doesn't help bring them back. We lost our beautiful Alex and I look at my photo's and dvd clips regularly and remember his lovely laugh and passion for food.
