Gift of Giving

Friday, December 25, 2009

The holiday season, what better time to exercise the spirit in addition to the body. While I always practice the gift of giving, it seems to be exemplified during the winter holidays. It doesn't matter what holidays you celebrate, that gift always seems to show it's face, even if it is just the gift of sharing time with family.

People always look at me funny when I tell them I still believe in Santa Claus. It's true, I do. Usually I'm met with a knowing smile or wink as they think I'm just saying that for the benefit of the children running around, but I say it because it is true. Santa is a great symbol of the spirit of giving. This is something I believe strongly in, charity, giving, helping others...this is a gift I plan to give my children. The ability to believe in Santa their whole lives and to carry on his message for years to come.

Eventually, when the girls are older I want to make sure they experience giving in situations like toy drives, soup kitchens, etc. It doesn't take a lot of effort to spread the love and joy of life to others and I hope that is a message I make loud and clear to my kids.

Happy Holdiays, and may Santa grace you with his spirit all year round! Take a moment today to do something unexpected for another; you might be surprised at how good it makes you feel (not to mention making someone elses day!!)
