Day 6 of 301. (March 11 , 2010)

A fat guy has a setback.

Observation – Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now.

I’m still 271 lbs by the way, let’s just get that out in the open and move on. I was actually 271.5 this morning; apparently my scale read yesterday’s blog and decided to get even for the "sharpened axe" comment.

I did my running last night. Yeah for me. I wasn’t going to, but I did. My wife and I have a silly game we play on Thursday night. We update our Facebook statuses with quotes from The Office and 30 Rock. It’s a hoot and it makes our friends think we are insane.

I had convinced myself I would do my running after our shows were over but, by that time, I just wanted to be a vegetable. I was just about to go to bed at 10:30 when I changed my mind. Suck it up baby!

So 15 minutes later I was out the door to go running at 10:45 PM.

I’m on Week 4 of the Couch to 5K system. Last night’s program was 5 minutes of brisk walking followed by a 3 minute run, 90 second walk, 5 minute run, 2 minute walk, 3 minute run, 2 minute walk, 5 minute run and then a 5 minute cool down.

As I was running I started to get an ache in my left ankle that increased throughout my run. By the end of the run I was pretty sore. Thinking back, it was bothering me a little when I ran on Tuesday, but nothing like this. When I got home and took off my shoes I noticed it was swollen. Ice, ice and more ice. I was able to do some reading today and I posted to some of the runners forums on Sparkpeople asking for help. I’m pretty sure it’s some early form of tendonitis.

Truth be told, I am a little worried. Injuries can be game changers. The biggest thing I have going for me now is momentum and I don’t want something like a stupid tendon messing this up.

Bottom line – It looks like I’ll be taking a few days off from running. I will also be stretching a whole heck of a lot more these next few days.

Today’s exercise blog entry…

What I liked about exercise yesterday – I am glad I didn’t miss. So far I have been able to keep my goal of 30 minutes of cardio everyday except Sunday. Booyah!

What was hard about exercising? – Not too much really except for the fact that I almost excused my self out of a good run. My heart rate and breathing were OK. My ankle however, not so much.

Excuses I made to avoid this exercise – I need to be very careful about telling myself I deserve time off. I’ve had years of time off and it didn’t do anything for me except raise my blood pressure and make me a consumer of sans-a-belt slacks.

Did I exercise? – Yes I did

Did I enjoy it? – Yes. Running at night is pretty cool.

Today’s motivation – lose the weight, get in shape. 269 on the scale would be nice.

    I tried to send this but let me try again. I'm not a pro in any way. But what shoes are you using are they new? Cuz sometimes shin splints and ankle problem can be from needing new shoes. Way to go Mike! You are a motivation! Thanks
