Need positive thoughts and prayers

Sunday, March 21, 2010

It has really been an exhausting weekend. I have spent a better part of the weekend being with my family at the hospital. Seems that after having a routine physical, my 77 yr old father has just found out that he has acute myeloid leukemia. To make a long story short, it appears that there is not really a treatment for this since he is of advanced age. So, they recommend supportive care versus trying to administer chemotherapy. The supportive care would entail blood/platelet transfusions as needed and kind of a wait and see. We are trying to see a leukemia specialist to make sure we have all our options. Anyway, this has certainly been a test of my faith. We all know deep down that our parents are not going to live forever, but you truly do not think of them dying...The initial prognosis is the survival rate is really bad maybe 8-12 weeks. It all depends not how his body reacts to the transfusions, etc. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we go through this difficult time.

thanks, my spark family,

I am sending you this because I care and hope that it will make a difference. I can try to find more info, but there might be hope in treatment with change of diet. Though I am the only person on both sides of the family with celiac disease "proper", what family members don't understand is that you don't have to HAVE celiac disease. They are likely on the "spectrum" of sensitivity to gluten. Gluten doesn't know of medical parameters or definitions - it just seeks and destroys whatever is that person's DNA weakness. My uncle has what your dad has ... unfortunately, I live in the States, he lives in Canada and we really don't have a relationship. My only frustration in discussing this, is that people don't believe or can't believe or don't want to believe in what I'm saying. And honestly, this is so rare, how could or would they? The next frustration is that people don't want to change their eating habits because it's hard. This I understand, but know that it's possible because where there's a will, there's a way. It's a shot in the dark. Maybe there's some talk of it on some leukemia boards? Anyway, I'm sorry for your struggles.

I'm so sorry that your father has leukemia that can't really be treated. It's one thing to get sick but then to be told that there is no real treatment is tough. I just prayed for your father and your family.

It is so hard to hear that about a family member or a friend. You may want to do yourself a favor though and check with an attorney. I was recently denied coverage for eye surgery at only 62 years old. I have Medicare and this should not have happened. I contacted my congressman and he said they are already trying to deny coverage to seniors by having their doctors tell them to elect the less costly procedure. I was shocked since that health care bill has not yet been signed. Within two days, my congressman had gotten permission and full coverage for my surgery.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father - you and your entire family are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. I lost both my parents so I know how difficult it is to have to face. No matter how old you are, it's never easy to come to terms with. Be strong for your dad and your family but take care of yourself.
