Cooling Off Your Rodents

Wednesday, August 04, 2010

The heat here is out of control. The high yesterday was supposed to be 100 degrees with heat indexes of 120 degrees. Today it was 102 but the heat indexes were less at 112 degrees. At 8:30 A.M. it was supposed to already feel like 97 and when I went outside to do chores at 7:30 it was already miserable. Tomorrow we may get some relief when a front goes though. It may be 20 degrees cooler at night though the daytime temps will be in the lower 90's. It will help though.

I spent the day doing some creative problem solving to keep the temps down in the house as chinchillas can't tolerate temps above 78 degrees. At one time it got up to 75 so I had to turn all the lights off and move the air conditioned air with some fans.
Gotta take care of my 8 babies.

Lower humidity today so much more tolerable so hope your babies are doing good.

I biked this morning, cleaned two baths, and finished the laundry. I am taking my Aunt (visiting from Houston) shopping tomorrow.

    Have a Fab Friday.

Our heat index is 94 as of now, 4:51 p.m. on August 5, 2010, with temp of 90 degrees.

The winds blew yesterday, and it clouded over, but no rain.

Keep your babies cool. I feel the same way with a body temp of 95. It's just too hot!

Oh my, I wonder what my August power bill will be.
If the temperature plus humidity is over 150, you should spend minimal time outside.

While they are very cute, they seem like way too much work for me.

How bad was that front going through for you?

Same here. I had to go out to take my son to the Orthopedic doc and it wasn't too bad out at that time, but later on I stuck my head out and it was scorching out there. We had planned on sitting on the porch but quickly changed our minds.

It's miserable here, too. Spent the evening in the pool with my kid, labs, and even dog Nash was on a raft (he's the non-swimmer. The pool temp was 90, more like bathwater than a refreshing dip. We did get some rain last night with thunderstorms predicted for today.

Stick you (and the chinchillas') feet in some ice, and stay cool.

I am in awe of how many steps you take every day! You are a motivation! And hope your animals stay cool. That heat is awful.

I always feel sorriest for the animals. We have a collie - he hates the heat, even though we shave his undercarriage in the summer (the other dog just melts into a puddle on the floor and waits for dinner.) My neighbors have alpaca and malamutes, and a couple years ago they put emergency AC in their barn (none in the house - my kind of people!)

Hang in there - winter's coming .... then we can all gripe about the cold!

yep fl has warnings on tv of heat wave and it is bad here. I left daughters today and went out her back door with our Precious in my arms and felt such heat hit me i thought son in law had left his big bb q grill on. It tho was heat only.

i keep my air off if i am not home and i have a heat pump system. so when i turn it on i litterly smell heat like a fire is in the house.

can not afford to run it all the time .

i say freeze ice and put it under the animals bed or pens wraped in foil or use blue ice under them wrapped in a thin

blanket that hold awhile, Good luck.

I open the house up in the early morning and let it cool off naturally (box fans in a few windows make sure the hot air is expelled and cooler air takes it's place). Then, before it heats up, I close up everything including the blinds & curtains and it does seem to stay cooler throughout the hottest part of the day. When I was a kid and no one had AC, I remember my Dad putting large blocks of ice in a pan in front of the fans. The air would be cooled as it blew over the ice. Maybe you could use a Tupperware- type plastic container to freeze water into blocks. They have to be big or they will melt too fast.
When it gets that hot, I wish we had a basement where it would remain cool all the time.

Yeah, chins are from the Andes. Quite cool to say the least. They have a hard time in warm climates.
