-------------THE AMERICANS TOUR OF IRELAND-----------------------
----------If this works-----I will be as surprised as anyone!!!!
I am not the greatest of writers--( I wish my DH was here--he was a published author and made things so interesting)----I shall do my best----but this visitation of my friends was a lot of fun and I thought you might enjoy a recap!!--They---whose names are Dottie and Roger--arrived like "Greeks bearing gifts"---They brought me Smuckers natural Peanut Butter and Kraft Grated Parmesan cheese. Neither of which can I get here---and Ireland does not do good Peanut Butter.-----After initial rolling happily on the floor with the Peanut Butter-----I calmed sown and we sat and made decision on where we should go first.----It was determined that we would go to the village of Cong where there is a famous 13th Century Abbey---and also where "The Quiet Man" was filmed.
The Abbey has carvings on one of the doorways that are considered the finest in Europe of that period. Both inside and outside the Abbey are gravestones----which by the way--are flat slabs of slate. They seldom had standing gravestones at that time.-----The Abbey is where Wayne and O'Hara ran to escape the rain.
Not too far from the Abbey is a vine covered house that was used for the home of the Reverend Playfair (the Protestant Minister)------Bythe way---did you know that the actor who played the Reverend was Barry Fitzgerald's brother!?
As you walk past the Abbey ---you go into the grounds of one of Ireland most prestigious castle/hotels------Ashford Castle---
The castle is originally 13th Century---but has over the years been added on to up to about the late 18th century---possible early 19th----not sure.----It has some of the most beautiful grounds I have seen.---When we arrived Roger caught me aside and asked me to arrange rooms for us -----The was an Anniversary surprise for Dottie!!! Their 40th Anniversary. Now this is one of the most expensive hotels in Ireland----diplomats and movie stars and Presidents-- guests of the Country stay there.---I got to stay as well and was very glad Roger was paying the bill
The interior is stunning and the furnishing of the halls and lobby are some marvelous antiques.----The grounds are famous for their design and flowers-----some great roses!!----We headed back to Claremorris the next day.
--------------T-t-t-t-that's all folks-----for today.
