Late Summer Peace
Sunday, August 08, 2010
When this time of year arrives, I always feel peaceful inside. When I was growing up, we would travel to my granparents' house. Their front porch is my profile picture. The house was big and old and didn't have air conditioning, only big window fans and a fascinating floor fan on the screen porch. I remember these late days of summer as being so full of fun: chasing lightning bugs, swinging on the big rope swing, catching crayfish in the creek, spending hot afternoons in the tree house, playing cards, sneaking up into the attic....
My days now are rarely so carefree, but if I can step back for a few minutes every day and regain the feelings of those peaceful happy days, so full of discovery and joy, I can feel myself relaxing and getting calmer.
I love cicadas, and their sound will always remind me of those summer nights, decades ago, when all I had to worry about was how long I could keep the lightning bugs in a jar before I had to let them go. Great memories, and blessed peace.
