Fried Tree

Monday, August 09, 2010

Total ugh. It was miserable out there today. We had a heat advisory and you couldn't even breath without sweating. I decided to get my errands out of the way today because it is suppose to get worse and be hotter than blazes all week. I was only gone 3 hours and got home by 12:15 but it was horrid. I hate to sweat.

Remember me telling you about the electrical storm we had about a week ago in the middle of the night? It was really noisy and we heard a lightening strike close by. On our walk the other day we found what it hit. Ever see a tree hit by lightening? It boils the sap and blows the bark off. Now we have another dead tree. The tree is bare all the way up and it a big tree. Very tall oak.

Yesterday I got in 17,158 steps and maxed my calories out.

I saw a tree with a straw driven through the trunk. It had a piece of hay driven through the fattest part of the trunk. A tornado did it.

Crazy about the tree. Hope that front that came through tonight cools things for a day or three.

That tree description makes me think of what you must feel like in the heat, too? That's very close to home ...

Wow! How close is that tree to your house? Stormy here too tonight. Hot and humid again tomorrow and Thursday. Looks like we may get a break from the heat the first part of next week. Hoping you get one too!

Better the tree than your house. But I truly understand. Many years ago, living in another county, we had a really old tree line with large hickory trees. Some were riddled with termites. There were also some wild cherry trees which were constantly dropping the stainful fruit all over our driveway thus creating a sticky mess everywhere when we walk to & from the house. Finally, we decided to take down about 8 trees and plant sugar maples, and red maples in place. But I cried buckets of tears the night that the trees were taken down. It was like a death for me, because although we would plant new trees, it would take them years to grow to provide the shade that the old trees did. So I fully understand where you are coming from on this. Not to mention this drought that our country is facing. I hope things turn around soon. emoticon

Okay, I wrote a wordie, somewhat humorous comment and SP seems to have devoured it!
I'll just say, that I'm sorry about the tree - it always makes me sad when a tree is lost.

Climate change. It's going to be in the mid 90's all week here.
Sorry about your poor oak. We have oaks planted in 1931 that were magnificant a few years ago lining the road across the street. They all need to come down now. Between the city and the county, no one wants to do it.

Yikes! We rarely get thunderstorms here (heck we rarely get rain, but that's another story).
    Keep safe & cool kiddo!

When I was a kid in Michigan, we had lightening hit a tree in our yard. It actually split the tree in half AND it caught fire!
We are having a cooler week here, for some reason - in the mid 90's, but the humidity is very high so it still feels unbearably hot and sticky. I do hope you get some relief son. I am going to try to get in a 15 minute walk now, before it hurts to breath in the hot air!

Our neighbor's tree was hit last year, and we had fried squirrel! The tree got a jagged, lightning-shaped burn down it; there were bits of bark blown all the way over to our yard; and a squirrel lay dead at the bottom of the tree.

Bill and I were out for a walk surrounded by thunder boomers last night, and I separated us so that at least one of us would survive a hit. This was either altruistic or selfish on my part, maybe a bit of both.

You may have maxed your calories, but I'd be grumbling if you were in my 50+ team's pedometer challenge!

It is hot here too, my friend. I had errands to run but got a late start. I was glad to get back home. I am in for today.

That tree is fried. The electric company came yesterday and cut back our "Black Walnut" trees as one was starting to get into the lines. I was worried about it but it looks like it is going to be OK.

Stay in today and stay cool.

    Hugs, Sunny

I'm starting to wonder if you live nearby-- I'm in Ohio, and we're in the middle of a heat wave. 90s all week, it's midnight. and it's 82 degrees. That's just not right.

Sorry about your tree. I do love a good storm. emoticon

I bet that was a big ka-boom. A few months ago, the neighbors tree was hit and split. You could see where the lightning hit because the wood was all charred black.

Try to stay cool this week. It's going to be more misery.
