Good Night, Sleep Tight, Don't let the Bed Bugs Bite

Wednesday, September 01, 2010

I remember saying this little verse as a child and not thinking anything about what I was actually saying. I didn't even know bedbugs really existed until recently.
There has just been so much on the news and in the papers about how bed bugs are becoming an epidemic all over the country. They seem to be everywhere. Libraries, clothing stores, hotels, etc.
Add to that, the fact that it's very costly and difficult to eradicate them once you have them in your home.
Apparently, DDT was an effective way to get rid of them and they were pretty much eradicated in the 1940's. But, DDT was banned in the 70's so there isn't any pesticide that takes care of them.
I am not big on using pesticides in my home, but I would if I needed to get rid of bedbugs.

Is anyone else as freaked out about this as I am? Just wondering.

I hate bed bugs or anything creepy crawly for that matter. One thing that I done that helped was used to steam cleaning and make sure its quite hot. Bed bugs don't like heat, pay particular attention to small cracks as they hide in those and steam clean the whole room or house if possible. Also strip everything bare, get rid of cushions pillows etc that you can replace easily. The only other thing you could is hire a pest control but they are just going to do the same thing I told you.

Oh my goodness, I've been thinking about it too. Bugs creep me out. Just the mere mention of them gives me the eerie feeling that something is crawling on me. I also read that since bed bugs haven't been a problem for such a long time that many pesticides don't work on them. I don't like pesticides anyhow, but I may be getting some as a precaution.

I'm not so much freaked out as I am just grossed out. I remember back when I was younger and first learned about bed bugs and just the thought of them freaked me out so much I had trouble going to sleep that night. I still don't like to think about them.

Yes. It grosses me out to think about it. Apparently they can live MONTHS without a blood meal. Also, they are nocturnal, so you pretty much have to wait until they come out at 1 am to pick them off of your mattress and furniture. Make one not want to buy things secondhand, go on a vacation to a hotel, or sit in a theater.....
