As I mentioned in my previous blog the course I am taking starts with an 8 CD Disc lecture by Dr. Andrew Weil called "Guide to Optimal Helath". It is really interesting and I am learning a lot. I am familiar with Dr. Weil from reading short articles but didn't really know his theories or beliefs. I am disappointed to find out that he recommends a lot of supplements, he calls them "insurance". I believe that consuming a plant based diet is all the insurance you need with the exception of vitamin D and B12. He recommends a multi vitamin, Vitamins C, D, E, B complex, carotinoids, chromium, calcium, magnesium and selenium. I don't agree with him on this. He calls water "the most forgotten nutrient", which I believe to be true, most people don't get near enough water as they think sodas, juices and coffee take water's place. Dr. Weil does say that green tea is counted as water and and suggests 4 cups a day.

    Today is my first day with the Sparks community and I wanted to be in the Long Beach group because I believe in staying local in all things, especially for support. I have a lot of respect for Dr Weil but agree with you on the supplements to a certain degree. I take a multi and am trying to eat healthy and as organic as possible. Looking forward to the ride.

    Good for you, Diana! You're really perking along at a good steady rate. I take a multivitamin and separate calcium, but I have resisted taking anything else although people have recommended various things to me they thought would help the fibromyalgia. I don't recall Dr. Campbell or Rip saying we need the extra stuff. I know how it feels to be taught BS in a training. I heard some stuff in grad school that made me roll my eyes, but I practice more according to my own values and experience now.

    I have been hearing so much about green tea, guess I'm going to have to start drinking more of it. Dr. Weil SELLS vitamins. That may be why he promotes them. !! I do value his opinions on most things, but I think supplements are an individual decision.

    You are really going to town on listening to those disks. I'm with you about the supplements. I wonder if he thinks just the average person, excluding vegetarians, need them?
