Surprise party for aunt in London.........

Friday, September 17, 2010

My cousin called me from Ireland this evening regarding a surprise birthday party for our aunt. Our aunt has lived in London for more than 50 years. She goes back to Ireland for every special occasion and she has come to the states about 10 times in the past 40 years. She is childless, but treated all of her nieces & nephews like they were her own. Of my Mother's 10 siblings she is 1 of 4 still living.

I hate to fly, but I really want to go to this party. The 2 aunts there are the greatest. They have always been great to all of us. They were here with me 8 years ago for 2 weeks after my Mother passed. It is planned for January, ice & snow season yuk! The party will be in London, but if I do go I will have to go to Ireland to see some older relatives who will not be going to London. One is my mom's oldest living sister who is 85 with Alzheimer's disease. The other is an uncle, age 86, the husband of another aunt who has passed. I talk to him every 3 weeks or so, I would really like to see him. I also have at least 100 relatives from my Father's side, who I write & talk too regularly, whom I would love to see again too.

I've checked fares to London, one way, it will run $1000 + then 74 Euros from London to Ireland. Then from Ireland to Philly one way is $998. I'm thinking I should go to Ireland round trip. But not let Aunt May know that I am there, so as not to ruin the surprise. I think the cost will be much cheaper. Then just book a flight from Ireland to London, round trip for the party.
Then back to Ireland for a few day, and leave from there to the US. I bet that would be the most cost effective way to fly. I will check that out.

However, I am still not a happy flyer since 9/11. I have 2 sister with ailments here whom I help out as much as possible. Neither one would be available to fly with me to the party. My DH will not fly either. I would be going myself, not a happy thought. I want to go, but I am scared to fly. What to do???

We are having a family get together tomorrow. I will check to see if anyone would like to go with me. Maybe I can convince one of my siblings to go.

To be continued.

I assuage my post 9/11 nerves by always flying to Europe on a non-US carrier like KLM, Air France, etc. I figure they would be less of a target than American Airlines, for instance. My logic may be off, but it gives me just a little extra peace of mind.
The price of your ticket seems sort of steep. Try for best prices, or sign up on to be notified of deals on flights to the cities of your choice.
Only you can decide if you can go or not; so I won't advise you; but I don't regret for one minute the flights I've taken over the last several years. Good luck with your decision and keep your Spark Friends posted!

I want to go with you! emoticon But of course, I can't. However, as you well know, I'm in ths same club about flying. My trip is Oct. 14. Let's keep cheering each other on. Right now, I spend the end of each day reviewing the fact that the sky has been filled with uneventful flights all over the world, and people have been getting to their destinations comfortably and quickly. I still plan to get some anti-anxiety drugs before I leave, just in case I have a phobia attack, but I am really working on not needing them.

When I flew to China, I got a homeopathic called 'No Jet Lag'. It really worked for my sister and I. The day we arrived in Beijing after a 20 hour travel time, we hiked the Great Wall and visited The Forbidden City and Tianamen Square. That evening, the rest of the waiting adoptive families did not want to do any evening activities, but we caught a cab, had dinner out, and went to the Beijing Opera. We woke up refreshed and ready for our flight to Hunan Province early that morning. You can get No Jet Lag on line; some airports carry it.

You can do it! And you will have a great time.

If you can go, go you'll never forgive yourself if you don't.

You don't want to miss an important family get together.

Hope you have a great time

Go!!! My DH hates to fly, but he will to get to London or Ireland. This party is too great an event to miss. I hope you do it! BTW, we usually get really good rates on Aer Lingus to Shannon or Dublin, then Ryan Air to London - DH says what you have found sounds too high, so definitely look into the round trip, as "open jaw" is much more expensive. Please keep us informed!
