Just kinda bugs me...

i KNOW there are other options, but hear me out on this one... My son who just started kindergarten, brought home the school "lunch" menu.. i use the word lunch very lightly... I start to look over the menu, and see what "Cheese Dippers" is lunch.. so being the nosy mom that i am i called the school and asked them what "cheese dippers" were... so i get transferred to the lunch lady where she tells me it's basically fried cheese sticks.. i asked her how that was a healthy meal and this is what i got(kinda funny..)

"see, the state lets us count the cheese as a dairy, the BREADING as a GRAIN, and the marinara sauce as a VEGETABLE......."

after i picked my mouth up off the floor she stated "well we serve them with french fries, which the state also allows us to call that a vegetable too.." french fries?!?!? REALLY?!?!?

i KNOW it's not any worse then going out to eat where the kids can pick a corn dog or whatever for a meal, but at least now they have options like apples, or fresh fruit to go along with that over processed stuff....

i know i can pack my own child's lunch, but with all the other expenses right now we are going through, and he is able to be on free lunches at school.. right now we can't afford it.. Just wish Jamie Oliver would come to North Carolina and do his little "makeover" show around here!!! i would be the first one on his bandwagon to get healthier options in school...

but that's my rant for the day... hope everyone has a GREAT week!!!

Love to all..

School lunches are gross. I'm a teacher and we joke about what "color" the day is. I'm not kidding... if it's yellow, they are having crispitos, cheese sauce, corn, and yellow pudding. The brown days are chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, gravy, roll, cookie, etc. It's really disgusting.

My son started middle school this year and my daughter is in third grade. Their schools both have main courses and side dishes. The side dishes are ones they can choose among. This has reduced the amount of food our school district ends up feeding to the garbage can everyday.

Anyway my kids and I regularly discuss healthy eating and are familiar with my daily question of "What did you have for lunch today?" It is very rewarding when they tell me they had salad or fruit as their side dish. Sometimes they have the burger and fries, but not always.

The nice thing, is when I ask this question before dinner I can add an extra serving of fruit or veggies to our dinner if I feel they need the extra nutrition.

Don't be afraid to go to the school board meetings and bring the subject of school lunches up. If more parents did that, those menus would change to refllect better nutritional options.

It's outrageous everywhere. They stopped cooking long ago and now just heat up garbage. It's pathetic.

I saw this same kind of explanation when Jamie Oliver did the show on overhauling school lunch programs.

I'm so flabbergasted by the explanation you got, that I'm having a hard time coming up with a comment of my own! *lol*

I can't believe they would even remotely consider that a healthy meal!

I hope that the other options on the lunch menu are better....

Wow, I am in the same situation finacially right now, so I feel your pain, but have actually been impressed with our options. I don't trust my son (6th grade) to make the right choices all the time, but at least they are always there (the middle schoolers have 5 entree choices every day, and the elementary has 3.) My daughter (2nd grade) is a very healthy eater so I don't worry so much about her. Do they at least have choices besides "cheese dippers" and french fries???? I am sharing your grief hon.

**Oops, I reread that there are other options, but still.....UGH!
