Three Year Spark Anniversary

Monday, January 03, 2011

Today is my 3-year spark anniversary. I joined Sparkpeople upon the urging of my nurse practitioner when my cholesterol and glucose were going up. I didn't do anything with sparkpeople really until my blood tests came back even worse and my doctor told me I was pre-diabetic.

Lesson #1: Just joining sparkpeople doesn't do much

I had tried everything over the years and in fact had just finished a stint on Jenny Craig.

Lesson #2: Even pre packaged meals delivered straight to your house don't work if you don't stick to the program.

After getting the pre-diabetic diagnoses from my doctor I cried and cried, and then went to my husband's office where he (also a doctor) had these words "Well honey, what did you think was gonna happen when you ate like crap and didn't exercise?"

Lesson #3: Talking and thinking and planning and dreaming about weight loss and exercise doesn't help.

That night I ate pizza and got drunk and cried and cried. I went downstairs and looked at my workout room: treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, free weights and weight machines, DVDs.

Lesson #4: The most amazing gym in the world won't help if it's not used.

And the next morning I was up at 6 am on the treadmill. I started off slowly, walking at 2.7 miles an hour for 45 minutes.

The morning after that I was on the treadmill.
And the morning after that
And the morning after that
And the morning after that

Slowly..excrutiatingly slowly I gained speed on the treadmill. I gained stamina on the elliptical
I started tracking my food

6 weeks later I had an epiphany:
I could roll out of bed without needing "just another 10 minutes"
I could fall asleep in 5 minutes instead of 20, 30 or 45 minutes
I was more energetic all day- after lunch I didn't feel woozy and tired, I just felt good!
I started losing weight, finally! It was miraculous!!

Lesson #5 Staying with calorie limits and exercising REALLY WORKS

I felt so good! I lost 30 pounds! My doctor literally would come dancing in the exam room, so excited about my blood tests!! My cholesterol is great, my glucose is great, my everything is great!!

WOW, I felt great. So what if I lost 30 pounds in 12 months? My clothes were fitting better, I felt cute and sexy, and ATHLETIC. Most importantly I was HEALTHY.

Then..well, what happened? Life I guess. In 2010 I gained 20 pounds. I was traveling for work 2 weeks of every month, eating out 3 meals a day. I got a stress fracture from running in my left foot. Then my right foot. I was told not to exercise. UGH. The one thing that saved my sanity had been taken away from me.

So here I am, 3 years in, with a net loss of 10 pounds from when I started. The weight may have crept up, but my blood tests are still insanely good. I still am healthy, and I have been able to begin exercising slowly this past two weeks. I have an appointment with a sports medicine specialist on Friday and hope that he will be able to lead me down the path to foot health!

Lesson #6 I will never ever give up

Sparkpeople has been there for me during this journey. I can find someone going through almost anything I am going through at any given time. I've found some really awesome people on here.

Am I discouraged? Well, yeah I certainly have been.

Do I know the secret to weight loss? Yes. It is calories in/calories out.

Do I know the secret to motivation? The only secret I have is that if you treat your exercise and eating right like a job you will be successful, whether or not you are motivated. Do you love to go to work each day? Sometimes maybe yes, sometimes maybe no. But you still go to work because the trade-off of being broke is not worth it. And the trade off of not exercising and eating right and tracking food...is being dead young.

There are too many places I want to see and too many experiences I want to have and too many cute clothes out there for me to not take this seriously again. I may have slipped up in 2010, but 2011 will be better.

Lesson #7 Never Ever Give Up.

Yeah, I know it's a repeat, but it's the only thing I can say. Never Ever Give Up.

What a blog. I am inspired. I truly needed to read something like this tonight. I felt like I didn't have any energy as I was exercising. I know if I keep it up though I will have days like that and I will have days I can rock it and never look back!! Keep up the determination. You CAN do it!!

Great blog zuzu. I went through same lessons and still I am a work in progress. I am either re learning or learning new lessons everyday and

have enjoyed my new life as a skinny girl with 30 more pds to go.

I also tried the jenny craig diet. I had great results for six months but found myself at a loss when I came home in feb. The scale was either moving in wrong direction or wasn't moving at all. I was eating healthy foods plus eating there meals. I realized quickly that there program does work but is not a lifetime thing. Meaning it a great place to jumpstart your diet plan but once u succeed u need to startmaking and eating your own meals along with exercise and drinking water in order to continue having success.keep up the good work and continue with your journey

Leassons learned should be easier to use in time - 2011 will be the year things get done! We'll work on that, won't we!
Fingers crossed for the foot bussiness!
