Consistency is key to achieving our goals, whatever they are!
I know this, as I assume everyone else here at Spark does too. But it's harder to actually but this into practice. It's something I have struggled with in my weight loss journey for as long as I can remember. Ironically, it's the thing I preach about to my staff the most!
So in reading some of my Spark friends blogs, many of them have decided on words and/ or themes for 2011. I love this idea but have been struggling to figure out what my word or theme would be.
It finally dawned on me this weekend.... Consistency! It's the one thing I really what to achieve this year in my eating habits, exercise (running) and around my house. I'm great about it in my professional life, but just can't seem to apply it to my personal life, so this is the year that I make that happen.
Which brings me to my theme... Make it happen!
Last year I had lots of "excuses" for why I couldn't exercise, eat right, etc. And last year really was a hard year, but after realizing that I didn't lose weight at all and in fact, gained back 10lbs! I realized that I need to make me a priority and I'm the only one that can "make it happen!"
So this year I'm working through my baby steps again and building lasting habits instead of making changes that don't stick for the long term. I'm going to focus on one thing at a time until I have it down consistently, so I don't have to think about it anymore. And I'm going to make things happen, instead of making excuses!
So I've begun exercising in the mornings, so that I don't have any excuses not to work out. This is still hit and miss, but mostly hit now. But I'm going to focus on making this a habit this month. The good news is that I've felt guilty about missing morning workouts enough that I've been working out in the afternoons if I miss. So at least I'm starting to get exercise in fairly consistently this month.
And in two weeks, I start back with a personal trainer, so back to strength training again, which I am horrible about doing on my own.
I also got a calendar (another idea I stole from a Spark friend) and put i up on my frig to show my planned workouts for the week. I get a star next to the ones I complete so I can see my progress! And it gives me some accountability because my husband can see it too.
I'm also back to tracking everything, everyday. This is key for me since I have a habit of thinking I eat better than I actually do. I'm also back to planning my meals out for the next day, including snacks.
I actually feel better about these last two weeks than all of last year. But I'm trying to keep my focus small for now and just focus on a week at a time. Then maybe I'll set some bigger goals (like losing these last 50lbs!) later in the year. Right now I just want to focus on healthy habits.
So consistency is key and I'm the only one to "Make It Happen" this year!!
