Grandma's Spark Too!

Saturday, January 15, 2011

I don't know how many of you on Spark are Grandmothers. I have 6 Grandchildren, from 4 different families -- from 4 of my 5 children---- My husband and I are lucky to have 3 of our children living here in our small town, so I do see 3 of these Grandkids, fairly regularly.
I never knew how I would feel being a Grandmother. -------It is wonderful ! When they call me , ""Grandma"", it is like music to my ears! I have never been their regular babysitter, but will drop everything , and be there , at weird times, when needed, when their regular sitter is unavailable-- I have been known to drive to their houses to sit them, at 5am----till their parents got off a shift---
I think it is important for a Grandmother not to be fat---- to try to have a figure of some sort, to be a role model to these kids--- I think its important for a Grandmother to be active-- to run , or walk, and stay fit,and to show these kids that to-day, Grandmothers don't become breatheless and can keep up to their antics---
And so Spark is a big part in my life right now----It sure has given me a better quality of life, which I hope to pass on to my Grandkids-

I only have one DGD, she is the main reason I wanted to get healthier. I need to be able to keep up with her.

I totally agree with you about being healthy and fit for our grandchildren. I have 8 between the ages of 1 and 7...5 live near me and I babysit them 4 days a week while their parents work. I used to run a daycare out of my home so I'm used to the daily chaos and fun...I do give them healthy meals and watch their portion sizes and snacks during the day...my porblem was that I used to clean up after them, eating their unwanted food and that's what got me in trouble! I embrace the role of grandma and love that the kids actually like me, not because I'm "Gabba" to them but that I am interested in everything about them and I support them in most everything they do! The three who live away, I try to chat with them on Skype a couple of times a week and when I'm on the computer, they actually call me themselves on Skype...it is so much fun. Keep enjoying your grandchildren!!!

Lynda, I am not a grandmother - yet! - but when I am, I hope to be like you: available, affectionate, active. I had two wonderful grandmothers, one of whom was still with us until just a couple years ago. Great role models for me, and something I hope to pass on to my grandchildren - and it appears that you are teaching your grandchildren, too, as an excellent role model.
