Motivation to Strength Train

Friday, April 01, 2011

Ok with my mileage challenge behind me, I am looking to ramp up strength training once again. I pretty much just ran through the winter with very little (1-2 st days a week about 30 minutes) muscle building activity. For the last month, because I was so involved in the mileage challenge, I didn't do much of anything besides core work. I suffer from low back pain so the core work is necessity to be able to run pain free. lol

SO now I am trying to get back into strength training, hardcore. I really need help though. I will ALWAYS choose running over strength training if I have limited time. Don't try to talk me out of it because it wont change a thing.

I am going to cut mileage back to about 90 this month, that's the best I can do. Now, to get a program in place to start strength training once again. Help me find the time and motivation!!

I just said the same thing! I ALWAYS choose running. but I did have better results when I made time for strength training too. :-) Maybe we can encourage each other?

Plot our your runs and fill in the ST around them NO sacrificing but you will prob want to schedule some napping too. emoticon emoticon

I'm with you - I have a hard time sacrificing the extra mile or two for more time with the weights. 30 minutes 3-4 times a week is about all I can muster but it's better than nothing. At least you kept up with the core work, that should help you physically but also mentally, since you're at least still accustomed to that. Maybe doing some body weight work outdoors will help keep you interested, now that the weather is getting better? Best of luck!

I'm right there with you. I'm just worried about over-working my legs and getting injured...I guess it's a fine balance!

Awesome monthly totals for March! Eh, I would help ya but I have the same goals for April to *try* to put in strength training 2x per week, I would always prefer to blow it off so I can run! I think you've just motivated me to get my chicken arms working! I'm attempting to do strength training at home that way I have no excuses.

Make the time to do both- get up 30 min earlier or just do it while you cook dinner-- ala multitasking. And YES, you CAN do that. I'm super tight on time these days and I feel like I've been slacking myself- so guess who's going to the gym on a Friday night? Sometimes it sucks, but once you are there, you are so glad you did! Just make sure you build in time to stretch- even if that means cutting it back to less time- it's more about building consistency now. You can do it!!!

I'm the same as you...I'd rather run than strength train. I hope you can find the same motivation and dedication to strength train as you have for running. If you find a motivating arm workout let me know...I'd love to get rid of these "bat wings" of mine emoticon

Yeah, I find it easier to motivate to run than to strength train. I do upper body 2-3x per week and core / glutes 1-2x per week. Sometimes it helps to do the strength training first - get it out of the way and then you can't blow it off. Good luck!

I'm not one for programs, but maybe taking progress pics would be motivating?

i find having a program helps me get motivated. instead of being all willy nilly like i am now. i personally like doing push/pull split type workouts like making the cut. diet.com also has a ton of exercises with demos. most you can do at home as they all use free weights or a ball.

Check out Body For Life! I really like the workouts and the way they alternate upper/lower body.
