Nature's way of making me smile

Monday, May 02, 2011

I am at my brother's ranch in the country dogsitting while he and his wife are out of town. I always love coming here because it's like going to a retreat. They are so far off the road, that there is very little to hear other than what's around you.

This morning I woke up and looked out my window. At first glance, I thought there was a dead deer on the side of the hill in the trees. I could see a snow-white stip in the woods. As I looked closer, I could see that it was actually the big doe laying there. She was surrounded by the rest of the deer from the area. I would say at least 5 of them were bedded down napping.

When Captain got up, we went out the back door of the garage on the other side of the house so we would not disturb them. I took him for about a 20 minute walk and thought the area where the deer were resting was cleared out so we came around the house. I was wrong because one by one they all got up slowly and walked deeper into the woods. They know they are safe around here, but they don't trust us that much!

Usually I just see them walking up and down the backyard to get to the creek, so this was treat to have them around.

I couldn't get a photo of them, but here's a shot of Captain with some of the Spring flowers in the front of the house.
