Trying to set a record

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Let me start out by saying, I've never been a runner. I don't like running. It hurts my hips. I get shin splints. Not a fan. So lets rewind to high school gym class. Maybe it was even middle school gym class. Not sure, but I remember the fastest time I ever got 'running' a mile. Now, I was no Kendra or Ryan, running it in 6 minutes then sitting there the rest of the class period watching everyone else finish. And I certainly wasn't Matt, finishing in 6 minutes and then running another for fun. But I also wasn't Ashley, lolly-gagging around the track and being late to my next class because I didn't give a shit. I tried. I walked, jogged, and ran to get it done and over with. My fastest mile on record: 11 minutes, 57 seconds. 'YESSS! I made it under 12 minutes!' was my thought when my gym teacher called out my time as I crossed the finish line.

Now back to the present. The other day I was at the gym, and I decided to jog instead of walk. So I'm jogging and I decide, I hate jogging but something made me turn up the speed and I start full out running. Almost sprinting. And I decide, I like running. Mind you, I can't do it for very long but I like going full out, slowing down to a power walk, and going full out again. I continued this and as I approached a mile I realized I was going to do a mile in 15 minutes. I haven't done a mile that fast since somewhere in middle or high school during a fitness test. Still not as fast as my fastest mile, but my older, not well taken care of, in need of a tune up, body is doing something it did when I was in my teens!

So thats when I decided that I need to work at this and set a record of a 10 minute mile. It's going to be tough but I'm up for a challenge!

I can so relate to shin splints!

Way to go on running! Just do what you can and do it good...but always to the point that you enjoy it and will want to do it again next time.
