Are $ for a personal trainer worth it? Opinions welcomed!

So Spark friends..looking for some opinions..I have had some forced adjustments to my workout regime. I can no longer run ( at least for the next 6 months), which has always been my "go to exercise". I am doing some biking, but the knee is very unpredictable..I have tried doing the gym thing on my own, but have been sporadic...
I have discovered I tend to be successful when I have accountability..I joined the local running room , which meets 3 x week, so that gave me that accountability..I joined SparkPeople for the weight loss..Connecting , blogging and making challenges with others gave me accountability..
So my question..I have a gym membership..I have been assessed and presented with a 6month program to attain my goal of loosing my last 20-30 lbs, and getting toned..It would give me a specific time period 3x / week with a personal trainer ( all to myself for one hour)..Sounds great,,, its expensive..
Is it worth it? Would love to hear from anyone who has tried this route ( plus and minus). Thanks!!

    Thanks all for taking the time to "weigh". I have made an intermediate decision so have booked a trainer for a shorter period of time..Looking forward to getting started on a new part of my journey..!!

    You might need a few sessions with a trainer to learn what is out there you can do. I don't think you need one long term. Be careful, I tried looking for a trainer after I was injured, and most of them just looked at me like I was crazy. Get your Dr's OK, tell your trainer what your limitations are and listen to see if they really understand before you agree to anything.

    I personally wouldn't do training sessions every single week. It's hard for me to know when exactly I'm going to fit my gym time in during the week. I purchased 5 training sessions from a specific trainer at my gym. I schedule an appointment withbhim when in feel like my workout needs a shakeup. I tell him the areas I feel like I need to focus on more and he develops a new plan for me. I bought these sessions last summer and I still have 2 left! It's actually time for me to shake it up...better go set up an appointment now! :-)

    I'm like BubbleJ... I use my classes for accountability because I've become a "regular" and if I'm not there, I get "harassed" by the instructor (in a joking manor).

    I think whether its worth the money is totally up to you. Each trainer is different, so make sure that if you do decide to get a trainer, that you mesh well and that you actually want to meet with them each week. If you don't get along, you'll dread going to the gym, and that's not good at all.

    It depends on your situation, your goals, and the trainer. If you are completely new to strength training, I absolutely recommend a trainer, at least for a few sessions, so you learn everything correctly. If you are working towards a specific goal like training for a marathon or a specific sport or trying to lose stubborn weight, then the insight of a (qualified) trainer can be very helpful. I am a trainer and when I lay out a plan for someone I give them options. The first option is the most expensive one as it includes having the trainer work with you 2-3 times a week until you reach your goal. I also give two smaller options that would have someone working with me more often at first and then scaling back as they become more confident on their own. So after the first 3-4 weeks you may only need the trainer 2 times a week and then after a few months maybe only 1 time a week. You still get the guidance and regular check ins but you spend less money. Any trainer who is not willing to work within a client budgetary constraints is not worth it in my book. The other thing I would ask of your potential trainer is what kind of success they have had with helping their clients lose weight. Also, do they do nutrition for their clients? Nutrition is 80% of weight loss so if they know nothing about it (you'd be surprised how many don't) then it's not worthyour money. Don't feel embarrassed to ask these questions, you are about to spend a lot of money, and if they are a good trainer they should have no problem answering them. Good luck!

    Personally, I think they are not worth it. At my gym a trainer does a programme for you for free, and it gets changed pretty much whenever you want, plus they are around for advice, so I would never pay for one. Maybe do a few sessions to get some ideas and then go for it yourself. I understand liking the accountability, which is why I do classes. The other regulars expect me in the class and give me a hard time if I skip one (unless I tell them I won't be there). That gives me accountability, and the trainer in the class mixes it up for me!

    I have been using a Trainer since November. At first, it was 2 to 3 times a week. Once I got established and was working out on my own, I cut it down to once a week. Now, I am pretty sure I could do without her now, but, decide I am worth it. First off, she weighs me and does my body fat. So I know that once a week, someone else is looking at the scale. It keeps me on track. Secondly, she pushes me harder then I would myself. There are certain exercises I hate and she doesn't care, she makes me do them anyway, no excuses. (Like burpees, yuck!). Finally, she checks what I am eating, reviews it, makes suggestions. I would tell you to go for it. Use a Trainer for 6 months, I bet the results will be amazing. Interesting fact, it takes a full 6 months to get into shape and only two weeks to get out. So, good luck with your journey. PS: Just thought of one more good reason, trainers shake things up, so easy to get into an exercise rut, but, a trainer will constantly throw new things at you and who knows you might find something you like even more than running.
