Frying Eggs On The Side Walk

Thursday, June 09, 2011

It continues to be unseasonably, miserably hot here. Every day is centered around sweating.

Yesterday I got my car back so my son and I went to the Metro East area of St.Louis and celebrated his birthday early as he had to work today on his birthday. We went to eat at Casa Gallardo and I had a shredded beef taco, shredded beef enchilada, refried beans, Mexican rice, and a corn cake. We later had a Chocolate Oreo Volcano cone at Culver's. We went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond where I bought a bottle brush and to Sears where I bought an electric egg cooker. Then we went to Petsmart where I got lots of chinchillas food and supplies, and finally to Sam's where I purchased some motor oil and food.
We came home and discovered our big air conditioner wasn't working well. We put the stuff away and I did my daily chores while my son went to taekwondo. When he got home at 7:30 my husband and son put in our new air conditioner and it took until almost 10 with the 3 of use working on it. We were soaked and miserable and the chinchillas were hot as well.

Today was my son's birthday and he slept in. It took me a long time to catch up on indoor and outdoor chores plus I had to clean up from the mess last night. I did a load of laundry and had pizza, cake, and ice cream for lunch. My son went to work and I made some calls for my hubby and then I went to Autozone to get some parts for the van. It is having brake problems now and I had to give him my car back and drive the FX4. I returned the egg cooker as it was broken and bought a better one, a Cuisinart, at my favorite store here. Hubby worked on the van tonight and it's still not fixed. So I am out a car yet again!! Arrgghhh!! Can we ever get a break???? LOL.

At any rate the air conditioning is very nice.

Happy Birthday to Ian. :o) I'm sure glad you got the new A/C. Sounds like you are in for a record summer. It's hot here, too, but nothing out of the normal.

Happy Birthday to Ian! Still praying for Ian & Christy since Nov 7 (it could still happen!), and Ian's permanent job. Happy to hear about the retail one he's working, the one with the pink-slipped assoc mgr. But I'm guessing that's just a summer job and he's still looking for attrition in the school system to get him out of subbing.

I hate, HATE, returns and broken or defective "New" items; sorry it happened to you but am glad to know that happens to someone else besides me - it always feels personal to me and I want to have a little tantrum which is illogical and egocentric. But it even happened to Morticia . . . I guess it's the disappointment from having that problem with something "new". What kind of electric egg cooker did you get? Just curious. Is it for boiled eggs?

I have been on an anti-gadget kick for about the last 7 years, bought a stand mixer during that time but that's it. I have learned how to make 5 Minute Artisan Bread with dough in the fridge, I like that because there is no machine involved. And use a hand-crank can opener with gears. So am curious about your egg cooker. I boil eggs almost every week, either for breakfast or tuna salad. I know you hate oatmeal but I like to eat oatmeal for breakfast, with a boiled egg on the side to add protein.

There are many methods for boiling eggs but I do it the old fashioned way; I put a lid on the pan with eggs and water with medium-high heat to make it boil faster, and I stay in the kitchen to do something else (like make oatmeal or fruit salad) until you can hear it boiling, then I take the lid off and set the timer for 6 mins at a rolling boil. When the timer goes off I dump the hot water and add cold. I only like mine hard. And I don't get the green rings around the egg yolks. I always cook a pan of eggs, more than just a couple, and keep them in the fridge. I always batchcook because I don't mind them cold on another morning, though some do. For me it's a timesaver, as I heat up the oatmeal I peel a cold egg. If I'm making tuna salad I peel all of them at once in the morning. FlyLady says bring them to a boil and turn them off 20 mins for perfect eggs, and don't touch them. Sort of like the French method for rice. I've never tried that.

So please give a future blog review of using your egg cooker, and how you used it, and the benefits to you as I'm curious.

We've had the hot weather here too. Heat advisories, cooling centers opened, etc. I have been moving most of that time. Sweating like a big dog, LOL.

Don't the vehicles, and the AC, and the refrigerator!!, always break down in hot weather? Sigh. And anything that needs service, frequently Friday at 5. (Glad you got your Hughes service fixed, and AC.) Oh well, alot of blessings happened in that same day. Counting the blessings really does help me.

It's so great your hubby knows how to do all that himself, saves a ton of money too. I cannot do any of that, but would like to learn.

Happy belated Birthday to Ian. I hope he
enjoyed his day. I'm sorry about the heat,
but glad your a/c is working now.

You sure had a busy day again and I sure hope
you get your car back soon. How many eggs did
    you fry? emoticon
We are supposed to be the Sunshine State and
we are experiencing low, freezing temperatures
and I don't know whether it's better to be too
hot or too cold. Can't win, can we?
    Have a great weekend. emoticon

Despite the oppressing heat, the birthday celebration sounded really nice...and delicious! Mexican food AND chocolate, yuuuuuuuuum, 2 of my favorite things.

Also glad your ac is up and running. We just put ours in. Just hit 90's here in central PA. Our poor guinea pigs were super hot too, and, miserable as I was, I felt so bad for them.

    Have a great day!

PS. I watched an episode of the Addam's Family yesterday on Netflix. Just love it!

Wow, it's just one thing after the other - glad the A/C is fixed though. With too much heat, everything escalates.

And tonight I had to kick up my furnace a couple of degrees....

We did make it to 65F for about half an hour this afternoon, most of the day in the 50's with a 15-25 mph wind...

    Yay for spring!!!

At least where I live we aren't having to swim --- some of our neighbors are...

emoticon Our culture went to hell in a hand basket w/the advent of a/c. Have you ever heard how people went indoors rather than to cool off on the stoop at night while the kids were playing? The "village" used to raise the kids. Kids used to play outside. Another novelty?

I'm drooling at your food journal for the day. I haven't had Mexican (ie CHEEESE), for tooooo long. I hope you enjoyed it for me.

Whenever you write about how hot or cold it is, you speak for my experience, too. I can relate. I'm melting!
