Hi:
This last week we celebrated our first year back in California - moved here from Chicago area (Oak Park), to be care givers to our elderly Moms. We did so well, my 87 year old Mom bought home next door, and is moving out - back to being an independent woman. Being newly retired, I put on 22 lbs in that year - and I've struggled to get them back off and more. Not doing too well right now. Just spent 12 days in the San Francisco Bay area "Mom sitting" mother in law with alzheimers - ate out at least once a day - just getting her out of the house and into a little fresh air and exercise. Back up in the mountains now, and busy as ever, but needing to redouble efforts at weight loss and exercise. Every day I walk our golden retriever Jake down to the development mail box then back up the hill - a challenge at 4500 ft elevation. I've become a real mountain man - operating chain saws, hydraulic log splitter, snow blower (we had 26 feet of snow this season), generator, etc. Looking into some well thought thru disciplined fasting - hope that will help jump start spiritual renewal as well as more serious weight loss. Blessings, Larry - emoticon emoticonAny encouragement is greatly appreciated -

Hi!!! I remember my first year in Plumas. We had close to 30 feet in Chester and I was a flat lander. Doing much better with the altitude now. Hey...just a thought. I'm in Quincy. Perhaps we can work together to get to our goals. Congrats on your work so far!

You have had many challenges in the past year! It is hard to make major changes in your life and keep the weight off. Sounds like you are back on track again!

Thank you so much for befriending me. I really admire all that you are doing for the two mothers in your life. I hope that you have had a great Father's Day.

I'm a big of a history buff too---recently interested in European history the most. I really love knowing more about the culture of the past.

    Thank you!

Hi Larry - it sounds as if you are are really enjoying your life in California. I'm glad your mother is doing so well, and that she will be more independent, yet close by so that you can monitor her well-being. Does your MIL live on her own too? It is very difficult, isn't it, determining when someone with Alzheimer's needs live-in help, or needs to go into a care facility. My father had Alzheimer's, and my mother was his care-given until he became aggressive and threatened to push her down the stairs.

I'm interested in your thoughts on fasting. I have considered fasting one day each week, but haven't done it so far. I look forward to reading more about it here.

    Hi History,

Exercise is all really good, especially the kind you have to do in the mountains. But, it may only allow you to maintain your current weight unless you cut some calories too. In my case, I have to feel a little hungry most of the time to lose weight. You know, the kind of empty feeling? When I get to the point that I can't stop thinking about food, and it's not meal or snack time, I eat some lean protein and an apple. It always works for me. Maybe just praying would work for you? Ha!

That said, when I am getting a lot of exercise I can eat more and still shed pounds.

    Good luck, JumpinJack

It must be lovely living up a mountain, but maybe its harder to exercise. Your dog sounds like a real good exercise partner! If you are not tracking your food Larry, start now! It really helps to see where you are at. Sounds like you get plenty of weight lifting already! How about doing some strength training exercises to boost your fitness? That has really helped me, there are lots of exercises to do on spark, build them up gradually! I recommend the plank and side plank. They are easy to do and not too taxing!

Sounds like you live in a wonderful place!

I've been struggling too, but I think I've hit bottom and am ready to climb back to the mountain top.

I have a Golden boy too - 10.5 years old. He's really slowed down.

    Best wishes in your journey!

Taking care of my aging parents is when I had my greatest weight gain. I think it is a combination of stress, doing things like eating out, and not having the right kind of exercise. It does sound like you are getting some great exercise. Since you live in CA and it is spring, almost summer, I am certain that you have some really scrumptious fruits and veggies at your fingertips. Load up on fruits and veggies and nix on sugars and refined foods. I have found that getting back to an anti-inflammation diet with NO refined foods has helped my health and my weight,
