Food Triggers and Challenges

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

One of the teams I'm on has us blog about ore trigger foods and challenges...
for me sweets are the hardest things for me to I allow myself a small piece of dark chocolate most days if I want it.....funny since I allow it I don't seem to crave it as much... but the thing that really triggers a huge uncontrollable urge to over eat is salted mixed nuts...not sure why but if there are planters nuts in the house I can't stop thinking about them, I want to eat them....I have learned to portion them out but it is still better if I just don't buy them or get near them....
I have also found if I eat raw nuts, those with no salt or oils, I can eat a few and that fine, I keep them in the freezer at all time and make a trail mix with them, raw does not send me in a frenzy....
as for my challenges, when I come home from work, seems to be my hardest time of the day, I just want to stuff something, and it doesn't matter what it is, till I calm down or de stress takes about 30-45 minutes before the stuff me feelings go away, so I have some things I do as soon as I hit the door...I feed the dog, I tell her what a good girl she has been, petting her, calms me and her, then I go get the mail...look it over, throw most of it away, once I enter the kitchen I force myself to go to the bedroom, change my clothes, self talk about the day, highlight the good things......weigh myself as I am naked and in the bathroom, put on comfy things, take some deep breathes, make my mind forget food for a few more minutes, go outside and water my flowers, by then I might be safe to return to the kitchen, if I'm still needing to poke food in my mouth I try cucumbers, they are crisp and take time to chew chew chew....some days this works some days not....trying to calm myself can be a real challenge .....but I try my best, and most days my best is good enough.....

why I turn to food for comfort only God knows but I have learned that I have to take control of my food issues each and everyday, or I will loose the battle and once I start down the slippery slope of weight gain, it is very hard to regain my each day I am committed to doing my best.....asking the Lord and my sparkfriends to help me stay on the path to healthy living.....

I really like this blog. I may have to make a list of things to do when I get home, so I can redirect myself too. It's great to be able to see these things about yourself.!

Great blog and great ideas for me. I do fine in mornings and early afternoon, but when I get home from work into early evening is my trigger time. It's like I'm letting down (probably because I'm so introverted and I've been around people all day). Having a good routine at that time to help distract and destress sounds like something that just might work for me. Oh, and I like salt too much, too. Like yourself the raw nuts are better for me to have on hand. I like to try and have a few everyday for heart-health.

Kitt. It seems you are well in tune to yourself. It inspires me to talk to myself more and try to get to know myself. Most days I find I have already eaten the food before I realize it isn't what I should do. I aspire to be more like you and when you blog about your challenges and your ways of rising to the challenge I get ideas for myself. Thank you for sharing and your honesty,

Really like how you make going into the kitchen to fix dinner a last stop.

I used to (hoping no longer) 'reward' myself with food after the stress. I'm more aware of why I eat now, and it's easier to re-direct myself. Not 100%, but I like your moving around your house doing little things to get your mind on other activities. Once I move around, I think I will get distracted unless I'm really hungry.

Excellent blog! thanks so much for sharing --- you have great ideas and I love the way that your plan allows for you to continue with distractions if you still feel the urge to eat --- that is one smart plan! WTG!

I understand your wanting to NOT eat out of stress or out of routine... have you thought of eating carrots or apple slices on your way home?? or maybe just give yourself a snack that is low cal when you get home... you can still do everything you do now but its waiting for you.. maybe knowing that its there will have you crave it less... I have a apple about 1 hour before dinner time.. this keeps me from mindlessly eating while I'm cooking... You have done such a great job Kitt.. Its nice that you can see your triggers and work on them...Ronie

I have food allergies but I never crave anything but salt. DH and I have hypertension and he has a stent in his heart. I never buy salt or use salt but I know if chips or salted nuts are there I really want my hand in there. I feel the bloat next day in my hands and face so thinking of that uncomfortable awakening helps. I am an Apple lover at any time if my BS is down or I need a snack the apples are my go to fruit. Never refrigerated always room temp. HUGS Kitt, Pat in Maine. xoxoxo emoticon KITT you are emoticon emoticon emoticon

You have learned so much about yourself on this journey. I love your calming techniques. Is it normal stress at the end of your work day or could you make changes at work to lessen it?

I also like your idea of making trail mix using the raw nuts.
