My New Running Partner!

Monday, July 18, 2011

Haven't heard from me in a while? No big surprise! I've been crazy busy and have been horrible with exercise/nutrition. I'm finally to the point of my summer vacation that I have nothing else on my agenda, so now is the perfect time to get back to it.

With that, comes the introduction of my goals and my new running partner. I'm planning on running the Rock 'N Roll 1/2 Marathon in October, so I'll need to get started on training. That will definitely help me get back to it. It might take some time, but I'll need to help my running partner build endurance, too. He's new to this whole running business, so it'll take some time getting used to it.

Here's a picture of my running partner:

That's right! Meet Barnum! He is such a cutie! He is 9 months old and is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. We went for our first test run today, and he did okay. He gets distracted pretty easily, though. I think that's a puppy thing, but I need to do some more research. Does anyone have any tips on running with dogs and/or training dogs to run? I'd appreciate any advice!

And just for fun, here's one more!

(While I'm thinking about it, expect some pics from my new home soon, too!)

Your puppy is adorable! We talked with our vet about running with our lab mix when we got him a couple of years ago and he recommended that we not really run him much until he was about a year old, and then do it in increments, a half mile a few times, then a mile, etc. We did that and now he's up to running with us for 3 miles (then on longer runs we drop him off at home and go out to finish the rest). For a bit we were running him more often and a little longer and he started having some joint soreness, so I'd just be careful about that. Now that we backed off, he's doing great.

Too cute! I have no tips, as I'm not a dog owner. Have fun with him! I have a half in September so not far off from you!

Cute! I have to walk my dog first then after about 10mins he is good to go. Sometimes I have to call his name, but he thinks its a game so he keeps running. Is he leash trained? If not that's the 1st step. But also those little legs make it difficult lol

He is so cute! I really don't have any training advice as my puppy gets too distracted to count what we do as exercise. Our walks consist of a minute of walking followed by thirty seconds of chewing on a stick or sniffing a rock, then a minute of full speed running after the bird that had the nerve to land in the path ahead of us, followed by fifteen seconds of looking for the bird. Yep, she's entertaining but I gave up on her being an exercise partner.
