Kayaking Cures Back Fat
Monday, September 12, 2011
I love kayaking and swimming, but I could never find anyone to go with. Luckily, I work for a company that encourages the employees to form activity groups, so I sent a request to the personnel department to start a kayking group.
The response from the company was amazing! Within 2 hours of sending out the inital "who's interested" e-mail, I had received over 30 responses! When the follow-up e-mail went out to ask who was interested in a "Lunch-n-Learn" to discuss the group objectives and planning, I received another 20+ responses. By the end of the summer, I had over 80 people on the e-mail distribution list.
Now, getting to the "back fat" cure -
The first weekend of April, my boyfriend and I went to Florida for his birthday. I was really self-conscious about wearing a bikini because my fat exploded over the top of the strap (not to mention, all of the other problem areas). I didn't let him take any pictures of me, and I spent most of the time hiding below layers in the 95 degree weather.
With the kayaking group, I had scheduled events for every weekend (although, I only made it to about half of them). It was a great time, and I spent anywhere from 1-4 hours on the water, paddling around.
This past weekend, September 10th, our group had an "End of Summer Picnic" to get out onto the water one last time before it was too cold. Underneath my clothes, I decided to wear the same bikini that I had worn in Florida earlier that year. When I went to brush my teeth, I noticed something different. There was no bulge over the top of my bikini strap! I was so excited that I ran downstairs to show my boyfriend, while I was jumping around with joy!! He laughed and said, "I've noticed a change in you over the summer. You always looked fantastic, but now you're really starting to get toned!"
I love kayaking, and it is a great workout - not just for the arms and back, but also for the abs, shoulders and front thigh muscles. Although the season has come to an end and I may not be able to get back on the water again for several months, this accomplishment was a huge motivation for me to keep moving, because for the first time in my life I have seen the results of my lifestyle change.
