Skipping First Base

My nephew - the love of my life since my boys are now grown - is 3 and a half. He is playing T-ball. What a riot! These kids are so adorable. It's a joy to watch them play or rather it's amusing to watch their coaches literally pick their little bodies up and move them into place to bat, to lead off the base, to get to the base, to stand up "baseball ready", etc. They are so full of life and willing to please and yet most of the time they appear to have absolutely no idea what it is they are supposed to be doing or what their coaches want from them. For instance, my nephew has on two separate occassions decided to completely skip first base and run straight from the diamond to second base. Sound familar?

It reminds me of losing weight. We know what we should do, but sometimes we just want to play in the dirt, throw our hats in the air and roll in the grass or just completely skip first base altogether. We want to get on with it already and move on to 2nd base.

I get my nephew. I understand that he doesn't necessarily see the value in first base, after all, the shortest path between two points is a straight line so why bother to run the "v" from home to first to second when what you really want is to end up at second as quickly as possible? The lesson here is that all things first and that includes first base. That includes learning the rules whether for T-ball or for a healthy eating and exercise plan. If we are to be ultimately successful, we just simply cannot skip first base.

That's why I love this site! I love that I can eat what I want as long as I track it and I can have as much fruit as I want because to me fruit is as decadent as playing in the dirt or rolling in the grass. I love that I can go out to dinner and as long as I stick plan my strategy, stick to my plan, and count my calories I can still be successful. I love that "the coach" doesn't have to pick me up and put me back in position because I am in control, have a gameplan strategy and am in charge of my own base, but if and when I need it he or she (all of you - "smile") is(are) there for me.

So run out there and live your life. Enjoy throwing your glove above your head and eating something that other "dieters" wouldn't be caught dead putting in their mouths - after all, you've got the Spark to help you stay on track with your goals and, when needed, you've got great coaches to help get you back, "baseball ready". The key is to remember first base cannot be skipped because by learning the basics of "first" we are essentially learning the skills that will carry us not only to second and third base, but eventually all the way home.
