We Had So Much Fun!!!!!

If you're ever feeling a bit down and need a pick-me-up, spend the day with a 4 year old. On Saturday, our Grand-daughter, Elizabeth, spent the day and over-night with us. On Thursday, I was trying to come up with something that we could do that would be fun for her. Then I remembered what I had seen in a town about 30 miles away from us while shopping one day. I was passing by a small Floral Shop, when I stopped dead in my tracks. There, in the two display windows, were not one, but two, full-sized mermaids. Now those of you with daughters or grand-daughters have probably heard of The Little Mermaid (or Ariel). Elizabeth is absolutely enthralled with mermaids and loves Ariel. I can't tell you the number of times I have watched The Little Mermaid with her in our living room. I think that I know most of the lines! Anyway, the minute I saw the two mermaids, I knew that I had to bring Elizabeth to that store so that she could see them too. So.......off we went on Saturday morning in search of the mermaids. I had told Elizabeth about them when I first found them (in mid-summer) but hadn't mentioned them since. About half way to this town, Elizabeth asked me where we were going. I told her that we were going to Baraboo and she said, "Oh, Wow, Grandma.........are we going to see the mermaids?" I couldn't believe that she had remembered the town where I had seen them!!! I told her that I HOPED we would see the mermaids, but that with the Holidays coming up, the windows might be decorated for Thanksgiving or even Christmas. This didn't seem to phase her at all. She KNEW that we would see the mermaids. We finally found a parking place, and set off for the Floral Shop. My heart sank as we came closer to the shop..........the mermaids were gone!!! Elizabeth was not about to give up and marched right into the shop where she asked the first woman she saw, where the mermaids were. I think that the woman must have had a bad day because she really didn't seem to want to talk to a 4 year-old about mermaids. She told us that they had been put away. Well........we decided to look at the rest of the store and halfway down this very narrow aisle, was a mannequin. It was a woman from the waist up and I recognized it from the mermaid display. I explained to Elizabeth that this was called a mannequin and that it was the body of the mermaid and that the tail was very long and one tail was pink and one was green. We went further into the store, and there, in a little room were BOTH tails. Elizabeth was over-the-moon!!!!! I held the tail up so she could see how long it was. The other mannequin was also there so she could see where it attached to the tail. I have NEVER seen her so excited. When she settled down and she finally decided that she could tear herself away from the mermaids, we started back to the front of the store, when this very clear little voice said, "Hello there." Elizabeth stopped in her tracks and looked at me and said, "What was that?" I said, "Look up above us in the white cage." It was a bright yellow Cockatoo. His name was Percy and he did every trick he knew for Elizabeth. She was laying on the floor with tears running down her face; she was laughing so hard. She had NEVER seen a bird that talked before and to tell you the truth, I have only seen one other bird, an African Gray, that could talk as clearly as this one. We were in that shop for at least an hour and we have NEVER had so much fun. Seeing things through the fresh, enthusiastic, wide-open eyes of a four year old is so refreshing. I felt at least 10 years younger!!!
