Life style changes

Friday, January 13, 2012

I'm so happy my DH is coming home on Saturday. It means a lot of lifestyle changes for him that will be good for me too. We have to monitor his sodium intake, only 2000 mg a day. He is on a heart healthy diet so low cholestral. I dont know about physical activity. He has a lot of health conditions that make it hard for him to move let alone exercise. I wish I could get him interested in Spark People. The support and goal setting I think would help him feel good about himself. But he's 73 and afraid of computers and set in his ways. But I'm so glad he's coming home.

Changing his diet will be fun for you... you can open a sparkpage for him and track his food yourself to help with sodium levels and cholesterol ideas. I found that helping my dh by increasing his fiber and making cookies with lots of protein from peanut butter and fiber from oatmeal makes everyone happy and still healthy option. (Recipe is at Taste of home under...Peanut Butter Jumbos!)

I make them with only chocolate chips and the fiber, taste and protein levels give my husband the treat he is craving and they are good for his heart and health too!!! Having treats in the house will make his transition easier...Barb

I know it sounds like a huge challenge to find low sodium and more heart healthy foods. Your husband is fortunate to have such a willing partner to help him out!! emoticon

I am so glad he is coming home today!! Perhaps you could set it up for him and all he has to do is read at first! I know my mil is funny about the computer , slowly she is getting used to it... still calls for help, but she is getting much better at it... :-)

He's lucky to have you doing this together. Spark people is an amazing tool even if he just uses it through you.

Slow and Steady for Carl, they should give you instructions for activity to do daily.Ask them for this? I was walking less than 5 minutes and going slow and adding a few minutes as I could handle. I wish Carl the best in his recovery and wish you well too! We should all be on a heart healthy diet, really I believe.None of us need the amount of salt many consume.Processed food will have to much salt, become a good label reader and try to make food from original and use seasonings to replace the salt.It takes time and determination and dedication,he and you are worth it. emoticon emoticon emoticon Diana
